smart electric meters for business

Like everywhere then.

But for some unknown reason you decided to post about something completely different.

PS: Don't drink and drive, it's illegal.
You were the one going on about the meters calling home to say that the power had been cut off... the only instances where that happens is if there's a genuine power cut or the fuse has been pulled so my remarks are relevant. Whereas your "Don't drink and drive, it's illegal." is not on topic, nor is it factually correct!

Smart meters monitor the topology of a site. In other words the layout and the devices attached to the power circuits.

Some are more smart than others and therefore more intrusive than others.

The cheap ones store 120 days of load with upto 10 rating intervals per day. They have auto cutoff and advanced tampering montoring.

This all after the fuse board not before.

I also know staff working for Networks that install power cables before the meter are being closely monitored, where they work and when. Smart meters have been partly blamed for the results of monitoring.

Whether that is 100% correct I don't know ...

Whilst it's possible to infer some details about the topology of your installation, the level of detail and accuracy is marginal at best and the information is of little practical benefit to the energy companies. What they are interested in is how much electricity you are using because they can bill you for it, they are also interested in building a better picture of how & when electricity is used so that they can optimise local networks and generation capacity so that they can save money rather than have to over build capacity. To that extent, they monitor information from smart meters to understand the performance of the distribution network, they will also flag up issues such as overloads of your supply, because that represents a significant safety issue. Tamper detection & supply loss reporting is mandatory as part of the SMETS standards because any interference with a meter is not only illegal, but also potentially exposes data that is covered by GDPR & DPA.

The monitoring of staff working supply side of the meter is nothing to with Smart metering, it's just something that is becoming more common in general. For instance, my sister works for a large opticians & she has to have an app running during her shifts either on her phone or a company device, that app tracks her location to ensure that she is actually in the correct locations during her shift. Supermarket delivery drivers have tracking devices in their vehicles that report all sorts of information, such as leaving the engine running whilst parked up.

I was checking our bill last night and thought it was considerably higher than it should be. We have a smart meter and noticed on the bill it was an estimate so I manually read the bill to send them the correct figure (20 % higher than it should be) only to log in and be told I cannot submit a manual reading because I have a smart meter fitted!! will see what excuse they come up with on the phone this morning.

Previous supplier asked if I wanted a smart meter fitted in the house, couldn't see an issue with it.

New meter fitted, signal OK.

Only it weren't very smart and didn't work, so they kept over estimating the bill.
They asked me to take a reading, stating you put in the meter, if it's not working you sort it out or manually read the meter.

Next thing I know is the meter is a two rate meter, they have changed my tariff from a single rate to economy 7 on a completely different tariff to the one I signed up for.

This then causes issues when I look to renew or change contract because the MPAN doesn't match the meter.

They then come and fit a single rate meter and I change supplier.

Anyway in the end the original company refunded the full amount of their cockup and couldn't bill for what I had actually used in the 3 years because they had lost the data from the smart meter when removed.

3 years free home electricity, wish I had had a electrically heated hottub for those years now 👍

Smart meters ain't so freaking smart.
To err is human to completely f**kup takes a computer
