Sterile Brome

Field of first wheat full of sterile brome last harvest intended to drill second wheat but prevented by weather
Roundup after greening up post harvest then very lightly through with carrier and roundup again when greened up
What would the experts on here recommend in the way of treatment and spring crop type
I have spring beans available but wonder if a fallow would be appropriate as not expecting drilling to happen for at least a month

If you go spring beans you've got all the fops/dims which will nobble brome well.

I'd say if you've got beans then bung them in as long as you can grow them cheaply. They'll be better than a fallow because of the N fixation you could fallow and sow a N fixing legume mix but that's just more expense for seed which seems pointless if you have beans sitting in the shed.

Fusillade is about the best Fop type chemistry in broad leafed crops but do read the label. Do not cut rates. Broadway Star is the best in wheat. Pacifica is also good in wheat but is harder on the crop. You can use a half rate of Liberator and a half rate of Crystal in spring barley, both on EAMUs. Avadex isn’t much good. Defy has some activity though with the others above will be harsh on a spring cereal. Always check the label for approval - I’ve listed several products which are only allowed on certain crops.

If you are ploughing, slow down and set it to carefully bury the topsoil 12”+ deep where it can’t emerge from. Pre harvest desiccation can lessen seed return. Spring cropping will help reduce brome but a big burden will still set seed here even in April sown spring barley.

I wouldn’t fallow for brome

Plough it if you are into ploughing. Failing that direct drill beans.

Could sow maize and nail brome with PDM and Nicosulfuron (also ploughing).

Wouldn't fallow if it was me but would establish cover crop for the interim if no other option. Will protect the soil and be a great entry for the next crop in autumn. Could do a legume type mix.

Have a field off spring barley that is full of brome. Have been told to spray off start again. I take it the brome will head before the barley ? even if I wholecrop it.

If you wholecrop it early enough the barley will be in ear but the brome will shed seed long before the barley grains are fully filled. What is more important to you? Max wholecrop yield or no brome seed return? When the brome seeds start turning colour, that's the time to get the forager out.
