Has anybody tried using this in deep beds? Interested to see what it is like as an alternative to sand.... sand will not work for a digestor.

That’s a lot of lime. Got to be expensive bedding but happy to be corrected. Getting fed up with sand problems here! (Slurry and machines)

I think its ground field lime but im not so sure , if there is anyone that can confirm this

I had a customer bed their cows on lime, put it straight on the cubicles. Plain ground lime you would spread on fields, not the posh hydrated lime you buy in bags.

I should think milled straw would be ok in a digester because it floats?

No, used lime only on mattresses last winter and going to try it again. Cubicle lime £70/ton.

Anyone tried this method ? Seems risky esp with lime and damp straw ? When the cows lie on it won’t the bacteria grow with the damp even thou there is lime in it ?

Hopefully going to see a farm locally using this, very , very impressive cell counts and mastitis (well none actually!) rates as we look for a sand replacement due to slurry issues.
