T v o fuel

probably been answered but i cant find it sorry. Due to buy another drum of fuel tvo for fergie.
Last one 10 year plus ago , forgot exactly what i bought, i think it was kerosene, i use it for parts washing then also .
Add some petrol to it after ive put it in the fergie tank , ive a memory there were different kerosene s ?
What am i asking for, just kerosene ? 45 drum .

I thought TVO was a kind of mix between kero and diesel?

The vintage tractor site says diesel must never be used.
they recomend a mix of between 50-60% petrol made up with heating oil, which I think is kerosene. the harder work the less petrol. So for road runs 60%.
I have no personal knowledge of the subject though.
my only experience of TVO was running a 2 stroke scooter on it, smoked well, very hard to start, but cost me nothing out of the farm tank. I was only allowed it as the farm no longer had a TVO tractor. Sadly after dad realised the scooter ran on it he poured the rest in the farms petrol tank. His Cortina did not mind too much, but it was probably very dilute!

Ive always added a bit of redex to the tvo
U can see the red in the glass bowl.
While on with fuel should I be adding lead substitute ? Valve inserts won't have been changed
Fergie not left shed for a few years
Bought new carb while back really should get her together

mainly buying to top up parts washer but obviously will want the fuel one day so checking i get right one.
Same stuff airline's run on isn't it, aviation fuel ?

Is it just my keyboard gone wonky keeps loosing keyboard 😒 🙄

Kerosene is clear when refined but most will be a slightly yellow colour due to a dye being added to ''mark'' it. Fuel companies may add their own colour to it to distinguish it. Just seen one via Google called blueburn which is said to burn cleaner and has a vanilla aroma added to it!

There must only ever be 2 ingredients in TVO
  1. Petrol (unleaded is absolutely fine for a Ferguson tractor) 98 Octane
  2. 28 Second Heating Oil 20 Octane
Aim for an Octane value between 55 and 70
  • 55 if doing very hard work
  • 70 if doing topping and the like
To give you some idea of the sums:-
  • 1 petrol and 1 heating oil comes out at 59 Octane
  • 2 petrol and 1 heating oil comes out at 72 Octane
  • 1 petrol and 2 heating oil comes out at 46 Octane
  • Petrol on its own is suitable for road runs (with the heat shield removed).
Octane is not the only factor, but is provides a good guide line

Diesel fuel is designed to cause ignition by compression and will encourage pinking. It is not designed to burn in TVO tractors, and no upper cylinder lubricant is required in these tractors, so do not use anything other than petrol and heating oil.

Using fuel which does not burn completely will destroy the lubricating properties of the oil and that (in a Ferguson TE tractor) will result in wear to the cam shaft bushes and then loss of oil pressure from cam shaft bushes. Loss of oil pressure will, then result in damage to the crank shaft. Lubricating oil in a TVO tractor's engine should be changed according to the Tractor Instruction book.

This is also interesting as you are supposed to have a licence


Anyone in the UK who purchases heating oil (Kerosene) or obtains it in any other way to mix with other oils to make Tractor Vaporising Oil (TVO) is now required to have a licence to do so. The selling dealer of Kerosene will require you to show your licence before he can sell to you.

There are a number of very strict restrictions that must be obeyed or HM Revenue & Customs will withdraw the privilege and any breach of the terms may consitute an offence.

The restrictions are:

  1. You cannot use rebated gas oil (red diesel) in the mixture under any circumstances, unless the tractor is only being used for bona fide agricultural, horticultural or forestry work. This of course excludes road runs, shows, ploughing matches or any domestic or pleasure activities.
  2. The concession only applies to tractor models that were in production before 1960.
  3. The mixed fuel must not be used in any other vehicle
  4. The fuel must not be mixed in bulk for resale or storage.

I used a Standard Ferguson TVO stationary engine (same as grey Fergie except for magneto ignition and no electric starter) that came off a Massey Harris baler for years in my grain drying plant. Throughout that time I ran it purely on 28 second heating oil.
 
No, I sold it on Ebay several years ago to a Ferguson enthusiast from Aberdeen who drove all the way down to the Dorset steam Fair and called in on the way back. When he found that it was too heavy to put on his trailer tent, I sent it up to him on a pallet.
