Tagging pedigree lambs

Im relatively new to breeding sheep and have started up a small pedigree flock, my question is regarding the tags.. I have 27 pedigree lambs I want to tag but as you can only buy tags in strips of 5 what do I do with the remainder 3 tags which I don’t need? They have this years year number on them so I can’t really use them for next year? Help would be appreciated.

Keep them safe - sure as eggs is oval things, at least one of the other 27 will lose a tag before they make it to the sales and you'll need some replacements.

With pedigree lambs, would you not need to preserve the identity of those sheep, by getting replacement tags with the same number on?
That’s been the case with every pedigree breed I’ve been involved with.

Just bin what you don't use. I used to stick them in fat lambs but then you have to write down every number on the movement license when they go.

Use them up on fat lambs or if you breed xbred sheep and keep ewe lambs for recips for ET work I also use up the tags with management details on them too. Even with the management info on the end of them, they are just an official movement tag at the end of the day. Theres no issue using them in the years to come on fat lambs if you don't have ears for them this year.

The 'more practical' breed society will issue a new pedigree certificate with the same info on but with the new number.

FFS, Do you think we're made of money :scratchhead:
Lincolnshire is that close to Yorkshire, we're just as frugal with our brass as they are.

No idea what goes on in those new fangled, high folluting, Continental breeds :playful::playful:

So if i just forget about them, does that mean next year I’ll just start at number 31? And number 28,29 and 30 for this year are just scrap and will never be used?

Yeah next year when you apply for your next run of tags they'll start with next number in the sequence. So if you buy up to #30 this yearnext years automatically start at #31

Do they print it on the other side of the original to save paper, or just send a sticker with the new number on?🤔

We don't spend money on paper  (all our trees in Lincolnshire are still sequesting carbon to help little Rishi towards his wet dream of net zero).

It's all on a computer, the breed sec just fiddles with the numbers by some kind of electronic wizardry.⚡

In answer to the original question, buy 20 tags for pedigrees and 10 ordinary tags to put in the lambs that you should be selling fat that aren't up to the mark.
This will save the quandary and worry about wasting tags and will have an even greater beneficial effect on the performance and improvement of your flock.

So the tag manufacturers/suppliers no longer supply a few extra tags all the same number? So glad I gave up sheep because all the fun has clearly gone out of it. It used to be such fun catching them up again to check for the duplicates! :ROFLMAO:
