TE20 P3 Conversion - winter project

Finally have it all stripped down, and the engine is in remarkably good condition. A little bit of scoring on the big end shells, but other than that it looks in great shape.

Liners - they are glazed as expected, was going to hone but as new liners are relatively inexpensive and there is a little step at the top, I think new is the way to go, so have ordered a set of finished liners as I don't want to go to the expense of boring them out. Question is - how do I fit them?

I have read that the finished liners are ever so slightly smaller in OD than original interference semi finished liners, and should go in relatively easily after a night in the freezer, Is this the case? Assume i'll need to locktite them in if so as well

Or will they press in much the way the originals come out? Or will I need to super cool them in dry ice to get them in?

Regards

How are things progressing?

Had a few other things to complete over the last few weeks so its been at a bit of a standstill, but I should get time to jump back on it sometime next week.

Parts have also been a bit of an issue sparex still don't have the rings in stock, but most other parts are here now. Starting to think i may have to order rings elsewhere, but i was hoping to keep all the parts sparex as they are generally of good quality. I also need to collect the liner puller from the machine shop that i am having made to do the job properly.

On the plus side Injector pump and injectors have been overhauled and returned. The pump was in quite a state by all accounts.

Fingers crossed ill have some progress to report by the end of the month.

So you're not renewing pistons??

No, they are like new, not a mark on them, no evidence of any blow by, and the ring groves are well within tolerance. It seems a shame to scrap them, and would new ones be of the same quality?

The only wear seems to be a little on the liners themselves and some light scoring on the big end shells, even the main bearings are like new.

To be honest now that I have stripped it, a head gasket would have put it right but I had to strip it to be sure. Now that its apart and in such a good shape, I have decided only to change the parts whats needed rather than throw a full kit at it.

Managed to jump back onto this overs the Christmas break, but in reality I probably wouldn't have got much further with it even if I had the time as parts have been rather difficult to source. The water pump and water pipes were of particular difficulty as they were difficult to cross reference with any part numbers, and I still didn't manage to source thrust bearings as the ones listed by everyone i checked are slightly different to the ones fitted, but thankfully they were good anyhow. The thermostat was challenge as well, the one fitted was a 68 degree unit that I failed to source, so had to go with a 74 degree replacement that was the closest I could find.

Anyhow some photos attached for those that are interested. I got a local machinist to make a liner puller out of an aluminium bar, that did the job fatalistically well. The liners took some pulling out but the 60t hollow ram was always going to win that battle. I had hoped to drop the new ones back in relatively easily by freezing the liners and heating the block. But despite getting the block to 70 degrees in a home made oven, I still had to press them in. Getting the liners to sit 2-8thou below the block was a challenge as well, and really I should have had a purpose made pressing tool made that would have sat them perfectly, but I would have had to wait until the new year so pressed no and got it right with a bit of fretting with the puller tool i had made.

Other than the liners everything else has gone back relatively well. Main new parts have been liners, mains, big ends, rings, water pump and all gaskets and seals. Also had the injection pump and injectors overhauled. I have left the original clutch as its was barely worn and wasn't juddering or anything before I tore it apart. Water pipes I failed to source, but the 3 cylinder MF35 ones are similar and with a bit of trimming they will do the job perfectly.

All being well it should be ready to fire up later in the week. It wont be finished, there will be plenty more jobs to do on it over the next few months, but at least it will be mobile again so I can move it about as I have other jobs to do that I need the space for.

I have just phoned someone who has spent all his working life repairing tractors, he is 61 and he said all the
P3's he has overhauled and he's done a few over the years everytime they are bored out to size after been pressed in same as dexta so time will tell

Certainly in the old days that was the case, you can get "finished" and "unfinished" liners now, the TEF20 liners are all finished/honed before fitting but then they do just drop in and they never need pressing in place. I guess he'll find out soon enough.

Thats certainly the way they were done. But as @MeNoo said you can get finished ones now as link, you can also still get semi finished ones.

I certainly hope they will be fine, the pistons were nice and smooth in the bores when fitted, guess ill know in the next couple of days 🤞🤞🤞

You also have to measure the pistons once fitted as they need to lower than the block at tdc. I would have to look up the measurements, but you have to skim each piston in a lathe when fitting new ones. Thats one of the reasons I didn’t fit new pistons, that and the fact that there was nothing wrong with the originals

Well, its not gone well.

Had it running very briefly this morning, started on the button and sounded very sweet indeed with good oil pressure. However after about 2 mins on tick-over it started to tighten up and came to a slow halt. Its wasn’t sized, but had just tightened up and after a short cooling period its nice and loose again but clearly the pistons must be getting tight in the bores as they expand - bugger 😪

Looks like ill have to tare it apart again and get the liners bored and honed. 🤞no real damage done and the liners and pistons will be good, time will tell.

On the plus side at least everything is nice and clean now so I wont have to spend hours washing the all parts again.

Not ideal, but I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained.
