Telescopic tanker axle?

I've room for another axle and ideally want to run in a different track, tanker is about 20t ish so an offset drawbar would need to be man enough.

I have a tag axle on a trailer
540x360.jpg
of ours it lifts on air bags, has brakes etc. We dont use it and would consider taking it off if you were interested in it. Obviously you would want bigger wheels.

Are we fitting an axle, or two independent bogies one each side?
You might have enough room to lift each wheel without retracting it, depending on the angle you use for the pivot point.

Moving drawbar, why does the wheels have to move?

I think they are only sliding the axle back n forth, not pivoting it in relation to the drawbar. Sliding the axle to shift weight on the drawbar?

An idea I've had for years is to have a tanker in which the tank is mounted sloping towards the tractor , which will not only allow increased weight transfer onto the drawbar as the tank empties , but the raised height below the back of the tank will allow a narrower track for extra wide tyres without recessing ( or as much recessing ) and also , possibly , a bigger diameter tyre . The outlet would of course need to be piped to the back but thats the easy bit .

Veenhuis do swivel drawbars. It's going to pull sidewards at some point though. Not when using a splashplate I'd imagine but if you put an 8 meter shitty injector with discs on you might get some drag.

This is the dogs danglies to me though, 4 650/65R42 tyres next to eachother with the outer ones shoving out.

If you want to see more telescopic axles search for the dutch word "spreidas" which means spreading axle.
thats a fair bit of kit, it wouldnt work to well on undulating ground tho i wouldnt think? the middle wheels would let it rock and tip over, not a problem in holland though im sure:LOL:

just out of interest why do you want to extend the axle so the tyre runs on fresh ground. i think about 75% of compaction is caused by the first tyre, so by extending the axle you may get a more even finnish, but only because you are damaging more of the field, so the original/main tracks dont stand out as much. thats what all the controlled traffic farming is all about. you damage less of the field with a tall narrower tyre that has a long footprint than a smaller wider one that can run at the same pressure.

@snipe , on the subject of that. There is a system that simply relies on 12 meter tramlines, so every machine is 12 meter or an uneven mutiple like a 36m fertiliser spreader.
It seems to be an upcoming thing in Denmark or so I've red somewhere. Problem is, you can't do anything yourself anymore, or you need to buy all 12m gear. But, you can make your ground all wavey with a ditch between every tramline, nice for particulerly wet land. But that's a whole different matter.

I'm now thinking rather than have an extending axle I'd be better off with a drawbar that pivots,it's just going to be very heavy having an extending axle strong enough to take the weight.

I've decided to have my 3rd axle fixed to the chassis and rather than lift the axle I'll drop the other two as they are already on air, that way I won't need brakes.:)

I can't have steering axles as the chassis is to wide to allow any turn.

Will your new axle have any suspension at all or just fixed solid?

Do you any pics? Sounds impressive. Do you like the hydraulic vac pump? We find them good and lot safer

I've a tread somewhere on here of the pump set up,but not the whole tanker.

Love the hydraulic vac pump (y) but being a tight arse I just used a hydraulic motor straight onto a standard vac pump,it works a treat.(y)

No,fixed solid.

Lift air bags leaving the field, drop them when entering, can't see why it wouldn't work.

Yes I can see your idea(y)

Only issue I can see is on undulating ground that trailer could pivot on the fixed axle, this could have weight transfer issues on the drawbar, the massive load imposed on the mounting point could be an issue? Obviously a different story if you are on fairly flat going?
Also at which setting would you be running with load compensation? On road or in field? Do you currently have a load compensating ride height valve in the system, I'm guessing yes?
