A staff members aunty has it - she is 93 and will die this week, not being offered a respirator, they have none spare

saddest thing is no family will be allowed to see her, she will die alone
She won't be the only one, but it does hit home when it's happening to someone you know. Mate's mother died a week or so ago, in hospital but not corona virus related, she'd been ill for awhile, their visiting was restricted to immediate family and her son didn't visit because he's over 70 and possibly at risk.
The saddest part was that she turned 100 last August and the funeral was only allowed at the graveside and immediate family (5 of them) Sad that we couldn't all be involved celebrating such a long life.

Early doors again...........
Up to midnight 1st April.
Cases (inpatient) 129
Discharged: 64
Deceased: 26

In other news Matt Hancock wiped out £13.4 billion of "historic NHS debt" with the stroke of a pen. Now this "money" doesn`t exist its just trading figures on spreadsheets and systems......but it sounds good. :) ;)

Do the nhs think once you have had it your immune or not?
Cheers

Fine now ta, when "it" was with me the throat felt like it was full of broken glass and barbed wire.

Sounds like cystitis in the throat!

I was sorry to read that you had contracted Coronavirus but highly pleased to read of your recovery and to also read your calm, informative, replies to the many questions posted in this thread. When we eventually make it through this pandemic the government should strike a medal for all NHS workers; from the top surgeons to the humblest of carers, cleaners, and porters.

Continue to stay safe, stay well, and long may you continue to swing your coil but don't forget to keep it really low.

They should also wipe off all student debt if, say, you work for 2 years further within the NHS

If they don't, the gov are wasting a hell of a lot of money and manpower developing and organising this antibody test. But IMO this will be a useful tool in a couple of months time but not what is needed right now, beyond the testing of NHS staff etc at the end of quarantine.

Why should they not?
there are no major diseases which come back to haunt you again.
Those which do go round and round do so by mutating, even then we normally have some in built resistance to them meaning we are unlikely to have a severe Illness.
in the past colonisers meeting new peoples often unwittingly passed on diseases such as the common cold. They having no resistance at all were often wiped out.
The respiratory diseases which infect the mucous membranes of the nose, throat and lungs do present a challenge for the body since the anti bodies are carried by the blood and do not easily transfer to these areas

Truly sad that is. Sympathies to all involved.
It will be scant consolation but nursing staff will be with anyone who passes away.
I understand the West Midlands/Birmingham is in a worse place than many others with case numbers, demand and pressure on services.
Looks like a few of us admin bods are in this weekend to keep things ticking along.

Stay well, stay safe.

Perhaps we should also reintroduce National Service, where recruits do supportive works for the nation; NHS, farm support, etc.
Yep, I've being advocating that for years. National Service does not need to be military service. Do your two years for just pocket money, but getting free accommodation and public transport. Then, after you have made a commitment to the country, the country should offer you fully paid study / training, with a grant and free accommodation too. I think a lot of the younger generation would benefit from this, and the country too.

Why should they not?

Do you suppose that the big new hospitals will turn to mopping up all the coronavirus patients and all the other hospitals will be able to return to operations as normal?

Over hundreds, if not thousands, of years we have formed institutions and practices to assist us in coping with the grief of losing friends and loved ones but coronavirus is even robbing us of those comforts. We desperately need to find new ways of helping each other to cope with all the restrictions that are choking the normal channels of coping with loss and greif.

Sadly, I am unable to provide any solutions to the growing problems of coping with the grief under the present restrictions but I do know that there are those out there that can.

I think an awful lot of people are going get a major f^cking reality check very soon.

We are animals that like habit, but we have evolved - as a species - to cope with change too, we wouldn't still be here if we hadn't. In the short term people will be shocked by all that's happening around them. But we get used to 'new normals' pretty quickly, the obvious example being WW2 and the Blitz. It would be madness to spread the disease while grieving for someone killed by it, so things will just have to be more private, but no less felt.

The new hospitals will be to make the best of what can be for those with not much, but still some, hope. We have heard on the news this afternoon that care homes will probably not be able to send any residents with suspected Covid 19 to hospital, and my guess is that the next thing will be for district / community nurses to change their usual role for one of almost solely palliative care...

But none of that is bad news; it's all rational and - even more importantly - necessary. Necessary for the country to function properly under the current conditions. And as it continues to function and as we continue to increase care capacity everything will get better, and the longer we can flatten the curve the better it will get. That extra time also meaning we get closer to a vaccine and / or finding an effective 'cure'. :)

Was saying to my mrs this morning they should give a medal to all of them, and those in care homes, they are facing real risks due to the high virual loading.
Very brave and deserve to be remembered
