I can’t remember where I found that, I’ll have to do a bit of research. A good mate is a top tree surgeon and I think I first found it with him in mind. I guess there’s still the risk of the blade coming off though!

It broke because of an inadequate fillet radius at the base of the machined plate (1st picture) used to see it a lot on race cranks that had been machined badly/cheaply. Needs to be a decent radius and ideally polished. Having the end of that central drilling ending where it does doesnt help either!!

I agree with MrNoo. Its a very basic design error to have a sharp change in section at that point. The state of the shaft with that ground out keyway and the scored surface isn't too clever either. I think you have a pretty strong case for a claim since that is about as safety critical a component as they get.

Have you had it from new, or is it a possibility that someone has bodged the shaft in the past?

As for a claim - it wasn’t that bad an accident IN THIS CASE. However I do think the manufacturers should be made aware and maybe they’ll thank you. Could have been a whole different t set of circumstances!

Would a splined shaft not be better for spreading the shock loading that will no doubt occur!?
