The near miss thread...

That crack has been caused due to metal fatigue. This tell tale sign is the smoothness of the break. The best way to prevent this happening in the future would be to test the shaft for cracks periodically say monthly when in use. The best method would be mpi ndt.

If you know anyone locally that’s does ndt might be worth getting them to take a look at the other shafts. It is a quick simple cheap test. All you need is a couple of aerosols and a magnet.

Well worth doing now that you have seen what can happen when they fail.

@Mursal might have an opinion.

As for a claim - it wasn’t that bad an accident IN THIS CASE. However I do think the manufacturers should be made aware and maybe they’ll thank you. Could have been a whole different t set of circumstances!

They’d be bonkers to admit there was a problem, wouldn’t that mean recalling all the other machines of the same design for correction? The answer will be that there was nothing wrong with it and was caused by operator error at some point in its life,

A good example for all those h&s lovers to have a chew on!

Glad you dodged one there Kev (y)

If this is a one owner machine, then the appearance of the bodged keyway is really strange.
Posted above the observation that the initial failure is fatigue (shiny straight line fail) and we would all know of machines which operate in a similar way with similar horsepower with similar duty cycle, then I would have a metallurgist look at the shaft if the original suppliers don't courier a replacement one round at high speed (and for free)

So how many do you think they have sold in the UK? Do you think a recall might be the order of the day, might save someone getting decapitated. I know Andrew Hooper quite well, just wondered if they are aware of the metal fatigue in there product.:eek:

Don’t know how many have been sold but they do need to be aware of it happening incase someone gets seriously hurt.
I’m not a rough operator and the saw head is well maintained.
Awesome machine when it’s working though and saves lots of time with chainsaw.

Kev, I’ve been thinking about this, could a heavy frame be made, to that the blades can’t ‘get out’ should they come adrift in the future?

Obviously it would have to not impair the operation too much.

James Hunt ..... you can't win a race at the first corner but you sure can lose one .
:whistle:

"Cornering is like bringing a woman to a climax. Both you and the car must work together. You start to enter the area of excitement at the corner, you set up a pace which is right for the car and after you've told it it is coming along with you, you guide it along at a rhythm which has by now become natural. Only after you've cleared the corner you can both take pleasure in knowing it's gone well."
