If you get no rain until Oct/Nov will it be that bad? You know its going to rain before long so just a question of riding it out.
I've not heard of anyone talking about completely destocking or switching to once a day milking or drying cows off. Even if arable farmers don't get an autumn crop in there's still the spring.
Just enjoy it the rain will be back before long.
so long as it is dry enough into winter we can leave the dry sucklers out till late December or even January, long way till then though!

Aye, the two Summers couldn't be more opposite if they tried .
Last year it didn’t start raining here until the latter half of July, this time last year it was nearly as hot and dry as it is now.
By the time the rain came grass growth was pretty much non existent and the first couple of weeks seemed to do little good.........we still wanted more and we got it.:(

Like they say, careful what you wish for.

Started raining here beginning of June 2017 and stopped beginning of May 2018. By that time you're offering sacrifices to anything you cam think of for dry weather.

We can't moan, we really needed this. The farm needed to heal from the nonstop wet.

Yes I agree the dry will do a lot of good for soil structure, much better than any subsoiling, just hope it knows when to stop, everything in moderation.(y)

I had a tree root block a drain, I dug it out in the spring and the back up of water filled the hole, I intended to go back a few days later when the water had dropped to put the pipes back in, the hole is still half full of water and running.

Definitely this, we had a heifer that ate it once and all the white bits were very photosensitive. Had to keep it out the sun or all the skin pealed off!
Does it not make eyes very light sensitive as well - I had to shoot a sheep a few years ago (burst eyeball) and sure that was one of the possible causes the vet mentioned.

Growing up I’m sure I remember hearing they were doing trials where they sent planes out into the Atlantic and they could get rain to form in the clouds? Or was that just F&M?
that was a few years back now, they overdid it and flooded Porlock. they was also experiminting with spreading flu virus

I think the wet made the dry worse if that makes any sense
It messed up the soil structure and made the roots shallow

Loving the sun. Loving the heat. Yes we're burning, yes the grass could do with rain, but by God;, stock are loving this and are doing great.

Makes me feel sorry for all the poor animals that were born in the raindrenched, wet years and that never really felt proper sun on their backs.
its funny you should say that despite having a bit less grass than usual strangely enough my calves appear to be growing quicker

Well we had 7mm on Sunday but looks like it was to late to save the maize on driest parts of fields. Just hope it was enough to protect the rest if it stays dry
