Trouble is a lot of dry years are followed by an even drier one ‘75/‘76,
89/90 and 2010/11

But not after 95 or 2003,

94, 95 and 96 were all dry years. 95 was the stand out dry year, but both 94 and 96 were well below average, a pattern mirrored in their summer stats too. 2003 is the odd one, it had wetter than average years either side of it.

I would've said 94 & 96 were average in Warwickshire. Neither one extreme or the other. I base it on memories of harvest rather than recorded rainfall mind !
95 was our earliest ever start to combining, barley on 12th July
We also had a crop fire starting at the neighbours then.
In 2003 my Uncle had a crop fire, started by a fag from a car

Yes it's madness ,but there is no straw down here in wexford and if we don't have it nobody does ,tillage farmers are freely getting 20 Euro for a 4x4 out of the field

It was rested through the winter and had a nice bite on it by March.

Sheep went on after lambing however there has been no real growth in the last month and the last two weeks it has burnt to a crisp.

South facing,thin soil over shale,not a good combination in the dry.

So, what happens if we don't get any rain in July / August either ?
In 1976 the water board cut off the supply for a few hours a day to conserve supplies. Dad had to fill churns when it was on to tip into cattle troughs later on. How will 2000 cow herds fair with this palaver ....the more switched on will presumably have their own borehole supply ?
Fodder ? Second and third cut won't be up to much. Plenty of 2 acre paddocks been baled with small bales though.. Baling and wrapping grass in October/ November might save the day ?
Folks start flogging cattle, will that depress markets ?
Shortage of spuds / veg ? Unlikely, everyone's got irrigation these days haven't they ?. Will it keep up with evaporation in this heat though ?

Just a few thoughts, no need to get upity, and accuse me of scaremongering / jealousy / not been progressive / trolling / rose tinted glasses / schadenfreude / etc, etc.

Got some thin spring barley on Breckland that still has cheesy grain. Is this worth cutting and baling for fodder? What’s it worth in a wrapped bale ( what size)?
