Thinking of getting an FE35

Mine is SDF 24 140

S = Standard chassis
D = Standard Diesel (23C)
F = Single Stage Clutch

That early a serial number from that year seems like it ought to be grey/gold so had probably replacement parts fitted where they are red?
Still amazes me just how many tractors were turned out in only a year at Coventry.

Interesting thread & I have done my own research on when changes happened. Our family has had several 35s - uncle had a 4 cyl diesel (awful starter) then a 4 cyl TVO (lovely smell when working but underpowered) then a 3 cyl diesel (still has it & where I leaned loader work in the 1970's!) and Dad had a 35x (wish he still had that!).
Must be the best tractors ever made in my opinion....light, powerful (diesels) simple & great visibility (better than 135). Those were the days....

Hi Tigger. Grille, Mudguards, Seat and Fuel Tank are all Red
Rest is Grey

From my extensive searching and looking before I ended up with the 35X I bought, it does seem like all those parts are the most commonly replaced, due to corrosion or damage, my theory would be that the red bits are newer than the tractor... But I'm still learning so happy to be proved wrong too!
I suppose you have the choice anyway to leave as is or go for a repaint to full grey and gold, whatever you like the look of.

Tigger first off it will be earning it's keep keeping the paddock topped, pulling fallen branches etc out of the boundary fence line and other small jobs
But I cannot swear the bug will not bite me to turn it back to original grey/gold

Tomlad, good question. I'm now running the family 1958 Dexta that Dad bought new from Perrys of north London and uncle still has his diesel 3 cyl 35 and a 135. It was always a family joke as to which was best and I'm sorry to say that the Dexta comes second in power to the 3 cyl 35, but that's excusable as it's 5hp less at 30hp. The 35x is the same as a Super Dexta - same engine I believe (open to confirmation on that). The little Dexta is still gutsy though but the gear ratios aren't as good as the 35 and as loader tractors (although our Dexta hasn't ever had a loader) there's no question - the 35 wins hands down with the extra power and the gearbox layout allowing a straight shuttle between reverse and 4th.

Always had Dexta's here, had a lovely Super Dexta, was the machine for lighting all the stubble fields as it was the fastest tractor on the farm, a chain and a burning tyre and off you went!! Father sold it for a Tesco bag full of cash unfortunately but we still have a normal Dexta (that I will do up one day)

MrNoo yes, agree, 6th with the throttle right back gives a real quick ride - 35 slow by comparison! Do that Dexta up a bit - ours has been, & its a treat. All original (apart from the proper empire blue & Howard Rotavator orange) as seen in my pic opposite this. Only mod is that i popped an upswept exhaust on her last year. £50 for a drill bit, new manifold & silver exhaust. Looks much better

on the subject of dextas was there 2 transmission speeds available? ... we had 2 but 1 now and the dexta we still have is a lot faster in top gear than the dexta we sold

Put it this way, in grey Ferguson production they produced over 300 tractors aday some effort back in the 50s
