My French isn’t too hot but I get the idea. Seems the urban / rural divide has jumped the Channel!You might think a famously logical nation might not be so silly...

I think its mostly people who've moved in from outside? Dutch couple to name one having lived here 17 years regularly made complaints against our local farmer's cattle bells - thankfully they've moved on... Another person up the road doesn't like the smell of manure heaps in the fields.

There's no mention, and it's only fair to warn Townies, that farm workers can whiff a bit, and be difficult to understand.

Where did you get the idea that the French are "famously logical". I should have thought the complete opposite.
As @PuG posted, there are several stories behind the need for such posters. Same across the UK too though is it not? "White settlers" cause all sorts of problems. It can happen even in sleepy places like Portugal. There was a couple lived just outside a village about 5kms from me. English(M) and French(F). Seems they never settled into the very laid back lifestyle so moved nearer the coast into a reasonable sized village. First thing he wanted was to have the clock stop chiming - Ave Maria for a while then the hour bongs; a shortened version of Ave Maria at half past the hour - 24 hours a day. Last I heard they left there too.
When in Rome etc................. and never, ever tell the locals what they should and should not be doing. My wife and I have wandered the world for the last 40 years and never seem to have any bother because we know we are the outsiders and it is not our place to tell people how to live.
Agree whole heartedly, it's a sound thats a part of the beautiful scenery.
My wife said "bring me something nice back from Switzerland, something I can wear"...
- So I bought her something you see worn all over country: a proper cow bell (used) with a nice leather strap.
As she was unwrapping it I said lovingly "It's so I'll be able to find you in the dark ?".

I have a cow that has a habit of escaping and going to the pub, she’s been fetched back several times so a mate of mine got me a cow bell for her when he was in Austria, it’s quite handy as you now get an audible warning when she’s out about the yard.
Last time I was at Euro Tier there was a stand selling a vast range of cow bells and I bought a black and white painted one for my milker who’s into collecting all things cow. One of the guys with me said she could hang it around her partners neck (he was with us) so she could hear when he was coming ???
OK, since we've gone there...
Through the summer, where I was, the cows wear small bells, strictly functional.
and in amongst the sparse larch on the slopes, they are really useful -as said above.
(I was helping move cows about...busmans holiday)
When the cows come down off the mountain, they're equipped with huge show bells for the trip, wrapped with garlands and religious symbols/effigies (saints and the like).
These are held on with huge tooled leather straps, trimmed in badger fur.
Putting high quality hand made working bells on the cows through the summer is a high risk, as r'soles thieve them!
So a lot of guys just use cheap tinny ones for the herder to locate the stock.
