Trailer rams cock up

So we told a casual to park a grain trailer in an outlying old Dutch barn but tip it up so any water runs out as the Dutch barn roof is in a poor state of repair. We never checked it and having now seen it today the casual actually tipped the body up and put the safety stand in which exposed the rams and they’ve rusted quite badly. Having never seen this before what’s the solution? Just plug it in and close them hoping the rust just falls off or do we need to try and clean them with something?

As above, use emery cloth whilst propped up and rub until smooth, if only one winter will not be totally poor state.
If you have to leave an exposed ram, smear with a medium grease, then wipe down before next use.

Quite common and no big deal. Will only be oxidisation, probably wouldn't even be deemed rust. Certainly won't have pitted.
A spray with diesel and a wipe will most likely be sufficient.
Either way, get them clean the least aggressive way you can, wipe with oil and carry on

Have you ever re sealed a trailer tipping ram?

The oil seals DO NOT contact the outside of the piston. They are at the bottom and work inside the tubes. There are some dust seals at the top to keep the sh!t out!
Fair enough but you don't want the dust seals getting chewed to bits as that'll let stuff down to the "important" seals

Depends on what kind of flap disc he's talking about? To start with, take a rag and see if it wipes right off, over one winter the rust should be pretty loose and powdery, you just need a little loose rust to polish the rest smooth. I wouldn't use any abrasive unless you have to.

emery tape every time, nothing else and definitely not powered, just make sure you have a good prop under it.
I would give the job to the offending student , he will remember next time
