The above is a grab from part of one of the RT threads, and it set me wondering. NFU likes to say they are reaching out to their Members because they send Tweets...

I consider myself to be computer literate and anything but a techno Luddite (first online in 1982/3), but I really have no interest in tweeting, my loss, I am sure.

However, I don't actually know anyone who uses or follows twitter. I have 3 offspring, all well educated and in postions of responsibility... none of them use Twitter. When were together over Christmas we chatted about social media, the 2 girls used instagram, all 3 used FB, their partners and mates were similiar, none using Twitter...

Who does use and follow twitter*, and why? Serious question.

Me, I like it, follow news, carlisle united , lot of farming around the world
there is nothing personal about it, you can follow and unfollow anything or body without anyone taking it personally . With facebook I found it can get you down , you see people you know up to such and such. are you missing out ?
so I decided to cut it out , why hassle on with social media your not enjoying

Interesting, isn't it. I asked the nearest NFU member if any of the NFU webinars posted on faceache had been watched this past year, and got the response, "What webinars?", followed by, words to the effect, "Won't do faceache because it eats data, and spies on other activities."

I stopped using FB a few years ago after discussions between my wife and I in the house like “why don’t we go to Paraguay next week” as a joke, go onto FB minutes later and an advert for last minute plane tickets to Paraguay adverts, big brother was always listening too much. I tried Twitter as a lot of “experts” in the Ag industry would post useful information like on worming challenges etc but a lot of it was carp or weeks to late to make a difference. Similar to someone trying to sell spring cereal seed in June 🤷🏻‍♂️

I also found twitter’s format quite difficult to follow at times when it came to topics or comments you could be all over the place on it, ending up going up to John O’Groats and back before actually finding what you originally clicked on.
Beware on Twitter there is a mass amount of Vegans and a lot of them with literally f-all else to do except comment abuse and report posts about animals etc.

I use neither Twitter nor Facebook. Never have and probably never will. My daughter did set up an account for me in each but I have never used either and have no idea how to log on.
Do not feel as if I'm missing out on anything, let alone anything important.

My wife apparently follows both. She says she gets local news from them, which is just about the only socialising she does in these grim days.

I like Twitter a lot more than FB, I use the latter sparingly and don't use any other social media other than TFF. I know lots of people on twitter, but also like to follow lots I don't. Find it a lot easier to use than FB and there is some great humour out there - the recent weetabix/baked beans one a classic,, although I only saw bits of it, as was the Absolute Unit (MERL). The 'Farmers without Borders' and 'Farmers of the UK' accounts with different users are a nice way to see different types of farming.

From my experience, twitter is mainly used (in farming) by what I'd call stakeholders. The trade use it more, the land agents use it more, the CLA, NFU, AIC etc use it more. The farmers who are on boards, or quangos are on it more. People who want to be heard are on twiiter. Irony is, no one is listening according the a latest Defra study. Twitter is more about promoting yourself, than education. Hence all the "I'm Aghast" videos you get on there. If you want to get on a qunago - its the place to be.

I am generalising - but that is how it differs to other places. There is plenty of good stuff on there if you look hard enough.

That means its often a echo chamber for policy as they are all talking to each other, just as a lot of farmers talk about the same thing over and over again on here.

I used to use Twitter a lot, it was very good with lots of farmers sharing a lot of interesting conversation.
Times change though and a lot of those folks have moved on and don't tweet as much. Sadly it's a fairly miserable place now with a lack of friendly conversation. I don't use it much at all anymore
