Something will only be done when the generally law abiding victims reach the end of their teather. Once they snap and fight back, the shoulder shrugging, claim off your insurance we can’t deal with it police will be all over them like a rash.If only your example was an isolated incident! Can anyone on here offer an example of police response to rural crime (especially where travelers are involved) that they were satisfied with?
We had a spate of break-ins last year and the police reaction was varied from "just get your insurance to deal with it" to "there's nothing we can do".
You're also right about having to do your own detective work. We had 2 tons of bagged cattle feed stolen from a shed (open fronted like many feed stores and barns so the initial police reaction was a shoulder shrug). Also suitable for horses so we had a pretty good idea where it had gone. Sure enough some empty branded bags started appearing near an illegal grazing site. Photo were taken and police informed.
THREE MONTHS later the police called saying they were visiting the grazing site but could see no evidence!
In the meantime we had found multiple witnesses who had seen a particular traveller with the feed and a farmer who was a victim of fly-grazing confronted him with the feed in his van. This traveler is well known locally as the King Gypsy of the local site and has been implicated in numerous frauds, thefts and coursing. There's even a video of him on youtube bragging about his illegal gambling ring betting on dogs and hares.
The police response to my evidence was "we're waiting for him to do something bigger to put him away for longer!"
When is something going to be done?
