Verticilium wilt resistance

Having dessicated my little bit of osr now, it's evident that there's more wilt evident in campus than Barbados.
Anyone else seeing a difference in other varieties?

Something I’d like to see investigated more. It’s certainly a problem here despite stretching rotation. It would be great if it featured alongside lls and phoma scores on the recommended list.

NIABTAG has undertaken observational trial work alongside breeders. Reported to members in the technical publications. Been doing this for a few years. And the scientists at NIABTAG developed a protocol and PCR technique. AICC also undertaken observational comparison funded by members subscriptions.

Badshot and Mortimefor golf are you NIABTAG members, if so then data is available in your technical publications.

Because verticillium is both soil and seed borne disease getting statistically sound results from trials is very difficult. To date the comparative work has if I recall involved seeding the plots with verticillium sclerotia to ensure presence of Verticillium and then observing what is seen in a range of popular varieties. The results are indicative really and quite variable between years although there are some trends with certain varieties generally performing better than others. And thus given the difficulty of generating statistically sound data doubt AHDB will include in the recommended list. But that is only a personal opinion. You would need to consult AHDB.

Best wishes,

so much more data needed on this - Campus has always been regarded as one of the best varieties against V Wilt in recent years.
I also saw the other day on the AHDB website the verticillium wilt has now been renamed ‘verticillium stem stripe’ - that’s going to take at least a decade to get into my head!

As has been said by others previously is not easy getting reliable trials data Verticillium resistance in varieties. You more or less have to wait until one trial has been badly affected before you can go in and score the varieties. It is not something you can plan at the start of the season.
We do have some data from previous trials and there are some varieties that are far more susceptible than others.
