Is anyone growing Walnuts? Heard recently that they are becoming more popular in the UK and after 30 years the trees can be worth £30k (felled) so 28 years of nut production and then fell the tree.

Long term investment opportunity?

I planted two here about 25 years ago and they have grown well but nowhere near ready for timber. The biggest one is maybe a foot thick. They have nuts on but the squirrels always beat me to it.

We have one walnut tree in the garden which we planted about 18 years ago, it has only had any walnuts in the last 3 years so they take a while to get going but the squirrels are capable of clearing a tree virtually overnight. Our tree is about 30 yards from an upstairs lounge window so easy shooting with the .22. Anybody growing any kind of nut crop commercially must have a serious squirrel control programme I would have thought.

Mine are are also organic. Have not developed a market yet as will not have a harvest for a few years, but I’m pretty optimistic that people will want to buy uk grown walnuts.

Not commercially, but we have a single tree that is a prolific cropper, The wood is highly sought after if of the right quality. I should think squirrel control would be most important, don't tell the vegans!
What the squirrels don't get the rooks will! They are absolutely crazy about walnuts.
