This orchard used to bring in on ave 5 Or 6 grand after harvesting costs. Now no market for the apples. Contract with local cider producer not renewed as they no longer want traditional varieties and they can import Apple juice in dried form very cheeply from France . Turned cattle in this morning . They will eat them as they drop !

I only have about 4 acres if orchards do not a big volume but a local cider maker is really expanding at the moment. They’ve planted 100’s of acres of trees and take a lot in from small old orchards

Job got overdone, they should of limited the new acres going in. I heard contracts were being bought out at 3yrs the usual apple crop.

Are there any grower owned producer/marketing groups you could join, for future years?

There must be hundreds of acres like this in Somerset which are not harvested now, just cattle/sheep in and under them to keep the grass down. Big shame as they look absolutely stunning when in full flower.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
