My son who is 14 is asking when can he take his telehandler test. Does anyone know
Your supposed to have a current driving licence i believe , seemed to remember being told that when I asked.thinking about it I don't think that's relevant but HSE state that not one should drive one under 18 , so you could be in hot water if something happened

A telehandler test is one for H&S reasons, they can be taken as soon as the driver is legally able to drive on the farm. This is normally 13 but Norfolk has a by law that you must be 14.
A telehandler test is not actually a legal requirement for anyone!
This obviously gives permission to anyone to drive such a machine on the road where the age limit will be anything from 16 - 21 depending on weight and tax class

Well thats odd, as my eldest son did his LANTRA 'rough terrain telescopic lift truck' test two years ago at 16, a year before he sat his car driving test.

It didn't give him permission to drive it on the road either, as it's only a LANTRA 'certificate of competence', not an actual DVLA driving test.

I did say it don't sound right

But you learn something everyday. I was told that the hander certificate was law . It seems its not

Cat B licence first to drive on the highway I believe, and may have to be 21 years of age if above a certain weight.
@Simon Chiles can be very helpful with these type of questions.

Yes, cat B license normally for a telehandler, so 17 year old can drive one up to 3.5tonnes, 18 year old up to 7.5 tonnes and 21 years old over 7.5 tonnes. Same weight limits apply to Ag vehicles that are not agricultural tractors eg Combines, Pea Viners, SP foragers and sprayers etc.

3 of my grand daughters took there's last week, 2 never driven TH before 3rd not driven the one doing the test on BUT the instructor was brilliant taught them well. 15, 16, 19. and all got the certificate. Oh and so did the 70 and 71 year olds that had never had a certificate before. Now I can have an accident and it will all be OK.

Legal minimum age to drive any forklift is 16
This is not actually true. The HSE appears to state this, but in fact they are reffering to minimum ages in restricted industrial sites where no one under 16 may work.
In all other sites a person operating any machine must have had suitable training, the definition of which is extremely hazy.
What is not hazy is when an accident happens, as it is obvious that the person was not adequately trained, unless they have a certificate to say they have been.
The law also does say that the person allowing such a machine to be used must ensure the driver is of suitable physical stature, ie can reach the pedals, and of mature enough disposition.
I think any farmer would be very wise to put their children through the courses , but whether the instructors will accept them may vary, as there may be comeback on them if there was an accident.

Tele handler course is definitely NOT a legal requirement
However it is a useful way to prove you are a competent operator
I have recently had to take over a job, where the fully qualified operator was nearly incapable of driving the machine. My ticket has long run out, but after a quick assesment , decided it would be better for myself to take over, handling pallets of solar panels!
