What is the most suitable drill for a tractor with 100hp

Hi all,

I'm wanting to take the drilling of crops on my family's farm back in hand.

So I'm justing looking for advice on which drill would be most suitable for the tractor we already have?

I'd want to be able to drill cereals, pulses as well as grass and bird food mixtures.

The land is heavy clay but is mostly flat, we have a 4WD series 2 ford 7610 which I believe has about 97hp.

I'm restricted on money so something cheap would be ideal (max £3,000)

A 3mtr accord combi ,landlord had one for years and ran it on a 7840sle ,did about 150acre a year

The problem is the fine seeds as it means swapping all the rolllers for another set on a bar which is a bit of a pain.

This is a good suggestion, subject to tractor lift capacity ( may need twin assister rams & plenty of front weights)
Also early model Kverneland tine seeder or a MF 510/ Vicon pneumatic disc drill.

We have a 3m Maschio/KRM combi drill we run on either a Ford 7610 or 7810 something like that would be ideal.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I think a Combi drill would be the way. @yellow belly we use a contractor to do the cultivations as well, but we have set of Simba discs and a pigtail tine cultivator that I would use.

Plenty of old carrier drills about but could be a pain to fill them.

Yes. modern-ish, and cheap-ish. 100hp-ish will cope with it easily.

We bought a 3m kuhn/accord combination last year, which was is borderline too heavy for the Case JXU and the 4370 had reduced lift capacity, so we bought a 4m accord DL with a cultivating element bar this year...
Spring barley field was ploughed, one pass power harrow, and in with the Accord... Most painless drilling experience ever, effortless 12m tramlines, and perfectly even germination.
I know the conditions were ideal, but even so, impressive considering how little the drill cost, how simple it is, compared to these £40k+ contractor drills.

10/10, Would reccomend.

Having said that, I've fixed our 4370's lift capacity now so could sell off the DL and just use the combi drill.

There will eventually be a auction of about 12 mf 30 drills of various conditions. A auction near Hull but it was postponed. All sorts of parts from a bloke who did them up but has now died .

Amazone 3m power harrow with a box drill on top.
Simple easy to work, fairly hardy, grain only though.
Worked mine on a 7840SLDP for years, with a front hopper blowing back fert with a hyd fan.
Your 100hp will manage it fine.

I would get a disc MF30 or 500. We run a 4m 500 on an 80hp tractor on heavy land.

Pull 4m bamlett with a 7610 can manage 60 acres on a good day
