Wheat drilling 2020

Latitude dressed seed from last autumn, down to 86% germination
Many years ago we had a field of Jockey dressed Diego... I could see the line in the field where the old seed ran out and the new seed started, from emergence to harvest. The stored seed the germination was probably 10% down which in error we had not compensated for when drilling.. it was also much slower to get out of the ground, very reluctant to tiller and finished up being noticeably shorter too. I was glad it was only a part bag... For a while I blamed it on storing treated seed... buts its possible it was always poor performing seed 🤷‍♂️

BYVD not an issue? Was it that bad you have dropped wheat and barley from your rotation this Autumn....

not used seed dressing or insecticide for 9 or 10 years now and not had a problem yet

Get your soils and rotation healthy and it’s a none issue , healthy soils grow healthy plants with brix levels that aphid don’t like / bother with

yields actually ended up much better than expected.......... but we’re still rubbish !

Going to start Monday here 1st wheats after let out spud ground luxury to have them lifted now so not going to miss chance
In reality would have started Monday anyhow on tricky fields some would be in 2nd slot and yes some would say to early but I’m old enough now to know trying to be clever and wait another month on heavy cold clay usually means a cobbled in mess or no crop at all
Yes I know optimum drilling dates etc but I can’t drill everything that day plough and combi here so work on theory that starting now we will get a fair spread of drilling dates and when we average everything out next harvest won’t be to far out yield wise
Got a bit of blackgrass in odd fields that’s at a manageable level and hasn’t worsened in 5 years and fortunately these fields will be spring crops this time
So loathed to miss some decent weather so will crack on
