Ours gave hassle with the bed units then shaft broke.. then gearbox packed up. Even if it was going it wouldn't cut cleanly and even blocked up in heavy timothy.. just rubbish. Sold it for a second hand Kuhn and it ran untouched for years, Fantastic mowers. just sold it for a 4m alterna, hope it gives the same service.
That 06 one advertised on fb by any chance?

Yea. really tidy, but not run it up yet as some vandal with a jd has cut the shaft too short.. hope all those gearboxes and double beds are not full of metal!

Ah ye oldie JD short-shaft syndrome. Be worse still going from JD to fastrac as well with them long link arms.

Drain the oil out and fish a magnet about or buy a borescope to attach to your phone for a gander about?

A mate of mine cut my first cut with a conditioner (always used my conventual) I followed with the tedder and did a fantastic job. I’m definitely on the look out for one. What do I need to look out for when buying a secondhand?

Had similar experience with a lely, but it followed a centre-pivoting Pottinger.
The bit that bugged me were the blockages and flimsy PTO clutch, and the fact a decent stone would lose the little clip and pin that hold the knife in, couldn't wait for it to go away.

That said we were contract mowing with it, wouldn't be as bad on your own ground where you know where the land. But not really a very heavy duty job for the price tag.

Most run either a Krone, Kuhn, or Claas mower here, but I'd look at the SIP or Fella as well depending on your replacement policy - sometimes the extra saving is as good as the promise of better resale, which you often don't see.

Tractor should not overheat unless doctored way over its original power, under any full load conditions. They are designed to work flat out under full load all day long even on the hottest days. His radiator must have been at least partially blocked. With a front mower, depending on grass condition, radiators may need to be blown out or cleared several times a day.

Plenty using 150 to 180 hp tractors on 6m combinations around here. About 33hp per metre of cut is ideal though in hilly conditions. Always has been. On the flat, at moderate speed in medium crops, 30hp per metre cut is fine. The contractor I use has a new combination of 6m working in heavy and steep conditions with only 26 engine hp per metre cut [160hp]. He runs at around 11kms/hr on the flat and may get down to 8kms/hr up hill. Still far more efficient than running a 3m machine at 13kms/hr all day with a 120hp tractor.

There are 9m butterfly combinations around here that are fitted to 240 and 260hp tractors which again gives between 26hp and 29hp/metre.
Its good to see that HP requirements havent changed that much, we used to have a contractor that used a DB1490 on a three metre Taarup which equates to approx 23 hp per metre.

good piece of kit we ran one for years ......Still with JD but newer model

I haven’t gone to see it yet (if it’s still there), are there any common faults/issues that I should look for?

My old man isn’t keen on a trailed but we’ve never had one before.

They definitely use Kuhn beds as my dealer supplies Kuhn parts for ours when no jd parts in stock.
Jd manufactured most of the other components I think. In France
