I confess to being past my best but for a whole raft of reasons still act as my own judge and try to improve. Unfortunately I feel that standards are starting to fall in my part of the world, hardly anybody travels outside the county for a variety of reasons and the Nationals hold little or no attraction. Youngsters are not coming into the sport and the local society are doing nothing to improve standards and offer instruction. Local match entries in East Anglia appear to be declining fast, perhaps down 40% in the last five years, mainly because people of high standard are not travelling into the county to compete. Next week is our regional vintage qualifier for the 2019 Nationals and I would be surprised to see more than one aspiring qualifier from within Norfolk across the vintage classes and maybe the odd outsider looking for a walkover. For what it is worth I was there both days. A great event and a terrible shame about the weather for all involved. I felt for the trailing men in particular who were struggling on Sunday in the conditions.
Thought the standard of vintage and classic mounted truly excellent throughout. I think the results in the vintage were about right and I picked the first and second place men out both days as standouts. Totally accept that there is an element of personal preference and the eye of the beholder.
As a relative novice I thought perhaps some of the world's tyke was not the usual standard but perhaps that was the conditions and in any case I am still in awe and can only aspire to that standard.
As a relative newcomer I am very pleased to have gone and I am grateful to the organisers landowner etc without which such a spectacle could not exist.
Regarding the results and the judging I can sympathise to an extent but in the end the best thing is to let results do the talking. If your plot stands out the judge has no choice. I am not yet in this league so I keep my own standards and if I meet them I go home happy......... Perhaps many oy yesterday's top men quietly do the same.
As I say I learned a lot and thanks to all. I also learn a lot on here but please keep the threads positive. Newcomers need encouragement if there is to be a future in match ploughing

A very well thought out post well wrtten. However it does not change things. Many good men have walked away - not from ploughing but from the National setup. They are still there in abundance at grass roots level, most of them giving newcomers a helping hand.
We all know we cant all be right 100% of the time but the system is wide open to abuse by those amongst us maybe not just as adroit as they ought to be. Take a good look at the Classic Class and listen to what most of the guys in there have to say. They cant all be wrong!
The scoresheet and rules at present are wide open to abuse and are serially abused by some of those in the higher eschelons of the SOP who should know better.
I know cos I was there!

Five directors stood up and tried to change things. They were chucked out as directors and then as members by a society that is manipulated from the top. How do you change that? Many have lived in hopes that change is possible but I am afraid that there is no clear sign that this is ever going to happen. As a past chairman said "There will be no change".It's a shame so many feel that way. I really hope something can be done to change that.
Glad to hear grass roots are strong. I have found that to be the case and appreciate all the help and advice offered locally
