Farmers will never stand together in this country, because there will always be the selfish/greedy/clever individuals that will break ranks when offered a bribe of a better price by buyers targeting a few producers in order to break the union and to divide and rule.
Always has happened and always will in this country, always a few people ready to break ranks for a few bob.

3 generations ago, farmers would all muck in and help neighbours with harvest etc. Now it's dog eat dog, gobble up any land going, must get bigger at all cost, haggle over every last blade of grass and straw.....
Where did it all go wrong.....

Divide and conquer. Ultimately supermarkets, through large processors have slowly devoured the food retail market at producer expense. This has been backed up by successive governments who have reaped the benefits of low food prices and an overfed population.

Absolutely on the button .
My Grandad always said “ The only time you will get two farmers working together is if they are screwing a third” .

Aye, when the MMB came into effect my grandfather took a slight drop in price but he didn’t mind as it gave those up country a decent reward for their efforts . He had hitherto marketed his milk through the Kirk elders as his farm was on the edge of town.

Because you are individual businesses competing against one another.

How is working together going to stop something like the milk dumping in your article when demand suddenly changes?

I'll get shouted at for this but when it comes to dairy I think the easy bit is getting it in the tank. I'm always amazed how it gets collected, processed, transported and sold every day with hardly anyone noticing.

Downward pressure from Supermarkets.
Very true...............

..............and, unfortunately, in the current crisis, supermarkets are seen by the government as 'the saviours of the country' by the way that they are stoically ensuring that the masses get fed, so I don't expect anything to change in that respect anytime soon :(

The bu66ers have all got adverts on the telly telling us what a great job they're doing looking after their customers.
Looking after themselves, more like. They're all lining their pockets on the back of this sodding virus.

Then do something about it.

Yeah, but sadly, it comes down to the point made in posts above - the fragmented state of our industry, competing against, rather than working with, each other :(

nah, it's a doddle:
1) An industry recognition that there needs to be a correction in the marketplace, specifically a reversal in the concentration of market share.
2) A recognition by UK agriculture that its allies in achieving this correction are to be found in the environmental and social justice movements.
Get the above two ticked off by dinnertime, then you've got all afternoon to implement the necessary measures.
