Why is it only the english who are racist

Last night I watched a programme with romesh ranganathan about the scottish isles, it was very interesting, but the guy who took him round who was a crofter mentioned several times that he didnt want too many visitors or new immigrants as it would destroy their way of life. At the end of the programme Romesh said that it was obvious too many immigrants would destroy the local identity, history and culture. Of course that is true but had he done a piece on England and said the same thing he would have been destroyed by the media. Why is it that it only appears wrong to want to keep an identity if you're English ?

I’m not even sure you can be English these days. I remember filling out a form, I can’t remember what for, but I couldn’t put my nationality as English,I had to be British.

I regard my self as Northumbrian, British and European in that order. Rarely do I describe myself as 'English'...
But the insult chucked out is "little englander" never little Scot,Welsh,Irish, french etc .
St George's day barely gets a mention but st David's and st Patrick's always gets a lot, st Andrew's less so to my mind.

To be fair he was born in Sussex from Sri Lankan parents, but that was partly my point, I wonder what he would say If a guy from his town said the same as the crofter did , who was a decent bloke, nothing racist about him just wanted to preserve his culture.

I wouldn't know when any of them are apart from Paddy and Andrew. When I worked in England, there were far more George Crosses flown than you will ever see in Scotland - the flag has been stolen by the nationalists up here now, and you wouldn't fly one as a default as it gives the "wrong" impression to your fellow Scots, I'm sad to write.

I guess cultures develop over time. Down here in sleepy Devon we have little impact from mass immigration but we do love our Balti, Chinese and all the other food places. The grill run by Turks is the ultimate late night destination in my town but we also still love our chippy.

I feel the bigger problem is religion. As ever. Causes people to go slightly mental and start killing each other. As generations come and go, things will evolve but I think in some UK cities it's maybe a case of too much too soon for some people. I don't know, I try to avoid cities as I find them dirty and intimidating places.

I would say that on the west coast, you are as likely to see the red hand of Ulster than the Saltire being flown.

West coast of where? Never seen one in Scotland, and spend a lot of time on the west side - from Lochcarron down to Girvan.
The west coast to me is Glasgow to Stranraer. I would be surprised to see any flown north of Glasgow. But go into any scheme and you would see various houses flying it.

The white one or the yellow one?
Always white from what I remember, But I left 14 years ago.

Every nation has racists, some of the worst I have seen was in Italy 20 years ago at train station, where a pair of Chinese women we being harangued by young folk with the police casually standing by.
In India there was simmering tension with the Tibet community that was in Himachal Pradesh.
