Last night I watched a programme with romesh ranganathan about the scottish isles, it was very interesting, but the guy who took him round who was a crofter mentioned several times that he didnt want too many visitors or new immigrants as it would destroy their way of life. At the end of the programme Romesh said that it was obvious too many immigrants would destroy the local identity, history and culture. Of course that is true but had he done a piece on England and said the same thing he would have been destroyed by the media. Why is it that it only appears wrong to want to keep an identity if you're English ?
‘S e am prògram miobhealach a th’ann!

I wonder if Sweeney managed to get Romesh the vegan to eat any of his lamb!?

Every nation has racists, some of the worst I have seen was in Italy 20 years ago at train station, where a pair of Chinese women we being harangued by young folk with the police casually standing by.
In India there was simmering tension with the Tibet community that was in Himachal Pradesh.
I once went to buy a minibus in a place called something like Lesmahaygo. I'll look it up. Lesmahago. Very nice chap. Took the train and he picked me up from the station which I can't recall the name of. Anyway, I probably shouldn't have taken my Jaguar bag as I was called an 'English C&£' at least 15 times and could have done with the fighting skills I have now. Very intimidating. Motherwell, was it that? Maybe not. I cannot recall.

Around there, the word C&£ is used as punctuation. I wouldn't take it too personally.

Here too but when you add on the nationality bit it gets a bit personal. Do you not agree?

Get us a pint you C is very different than get us a pint you Scottish C. Especially when you know that deep in their bravehearts they hate you.

Plus, would you appreciate hopping off the train at Exeter St Davids and a load of people calling you a Scottish C? I very much doubt it.

I've been called exactly that (actually he used 'Scotch', rather than 'Scottish', but I didn't feel any need to challenge his vocabulary) in Cumbria, and yes I didn't like it.

guess cultures develop over time. Down here in sleepy Devon we have little impact from mass immigration but we do love our Balti, Chinese and all the other food places. The grill run by Turks is the ultimate late night destination in my town but we also still love our chippy.

But the insult chucked out is "little englander" never little Scot,Welsh,Irish, french etc .
St George's day barely gets a mention but st David's and st Patrick's always gets a lot, st Andrew's less so to my mind.

Sweaty/ Jock

Taffy/ Sheep shagger

Paddy / Mick

Frog / cheese eating surrender monkey

TBF the English have a broad lexicon of insults

A welshman/scotsman or irishman wearing there flag on there respective national day while enjoying a pint are seen as lovable jolly rogues. An englisman seen out doing the same is seen as a racist lout looking for trouble. I would still rather be an englishman though.

Not any more - you can’t fly a St Andrew’s cross any more without looking like a Nat.

I am an Englishman first and foremost and proud of the fact. The " Britsh Passport " has been devalued nowadays. What will we have in the future when the Scots & Welsh have their own ???
