Will grain heat up in a trailer?

Hello,

I had a plan of keeping some barley in a trailer for a few months, straight out of the combine. It will only be cut when fit, not damp, not for crimping. Trailer would be kept under cover, away from rain and weather.

Someone told me that if it is left in a steel bodied trailer, it will heat, sweat, go mouldy. Whereas in a wooden trailer it would be ok.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?! Will I be ok leaving about 2-3 ton of barley in a trailer for a few months?

I probably wouldn't entertain it. I'm sure hay would do the same. I had a whole bottom layer go dusty, admittedly it was possibly not the best of hay but it only took a couple of weeks to go dusty.

it will go off ...i once had a small remnant....went off in days:banghead:

two things you can do...1/get on and shovel it around every day til it cools 2/ buy a small corn fan + ducting...set ducting on trailer...cover joins with hessian sacks....cover with corn....then you can ventilate

Just a suggestion but...

If its fully fit but you cant quite get it to 15 and half% because of the odd shower ...
Line the trailler with plastic sheet and get a few bags of 'home and dry' from your local friendly dairy farmer / neighbour and mix it in with a shovel or add it to the grain tank before emptying to mix it in fairly well
When the trailler is full wrap the plastic sheet over the top and place a few fence rails on it to weight it down.
Sheet can be pulled off after 2 weeks or left on to keep the birds off!

Will be good to feed and with an increased protein level.

Nb. Do make sure the barley is proper fit and there is no or very very little.. green corns or weed seeds in the sample though.;)

Happy days.
