Winter barley how early

Location
Devon
Am going to drill on Monday hopefully, starting at 100 s/m2 (about 50kg/ha)

Far far too early!!!!... you must love spending money on chemical's and enjoy spraying crops is all I can think of to justify drilling so early....

Last week of Sept is plenty early enough... just drill at 85 kilo's/ acre...

I would go for volume or quadra hybrid barley as it can withstand the wet and cold better, less than 200 seeds/m2 should be enough at this early stage. Low seed rates not a problem for hybrid, but needs nitrogen early to get growth in spring and must be given plenty of feeding to get the best from it. consider a secure dressing against aphids as bydv most likely with very early sowing. Pesonally we are not going to sow till end october on our dry kindly ground but what you descriibe is a different ball game. good luck

I thought you were growing barley for seed ?

No contract that I'm happy with available next year unfortunately

I'm just going to keep a small area in my rotation to spread harvest and risk bit and I think it can perform better than a wheat with lower growing costs on some of my lightest and poorest land

I can't find a decent seed contract either - premiums just too low.
Not enough c2 demand apparently.
