Always scared me the "recommended" seed rate for Volume when we used to grow it.
Wrong, Clive don't get these problems!
Bit of a contradiction in terms "sterile brome"- in our thankfully limited experience it is any but sterile and seems to multiply at phenomenal rates. No I do have sterile Broome !
Am going to drill on Monday hopefully, starting at 100 s/m2 (about 50kg/ha)
What about the volunteer oats? Surely need couple of chits?
Is anyone buying volume this year... With barley around £100 quid?!
Exactly what I'm doing with my tower.Home saving (tower) seed straight from the heap, not even going to dress it

I thought you were growing barley for seed ?
I can't find a decent seed contract either - premiums just too low.No contract that I'm happy with available next year unfortunately
I'm just going to keep a small area in my rotation to spread harvest and risk bit and I think it can perform better than a wheat with lower growing costs on some of my lightest and poorest land
I thought these high yielding barleys were going to replace. 2nd wheats .what are people growing next year. Must admit , I haven't bought any wheat seed yet .I can't find a decent seed contract either - premiums just too low.
Not enough c2 demand apparently.
