Did those trucks (presumably World War 2, US Army) have petrol engines? Bus company I worked for had a Mack 6x6 recovery truck, petrol, very able but not cheap to run... And my dad, a mechanic with the council, used to tell me about a Mack snowplough they had, which did something like 4 mpg?
Did your spreaders just go back to your depot for each load then?

The trucks were all bought brand new for spreading. The GMC's (chain hanging on the front) were 6x6 petrols. We had 3 of those and they would go anywhere but 6mpg tops. No heater in the cab as the floor used to get so hot from the transmission. Canadian Ford with the Kenwall hopper on was 6x4 and also petrol.
The Bedford RL 4x4's were a diesel. I'm looking for one to restore with a spreader on if anyone knows of one. All the lorries used to load in the quarry and go out to the field then return when empty. Took some time but then the tractors, combines and cultivations did too. Latterly they would also run a flatbed lorry out with a conveyor on the back so a second load could be spread before returning.

Being a third generation lorry driver, this is one of my favourite threads on TFF. The only problem is that its led me to Truck.net,where I spend waste even more time than I do on here!
Perhaps we need to persuade Dennis Fuller to defect on to here? ;) South West, livestock haulier, truck guru. Could make a useful addition (y) Are you reading this Dennis?

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
