this little chap has been very useful .....and is now very reliable he does about 400 humdred bales a year (hay and straw (not haylage / silage)

but i spent a lot of time sorting out smallish things that previous owner had missed / not understood/had patience to .....and did a few mods.when i got it....

i just run it on net .

keep the belts in good oder (not too is false economy imo) oil the chains take care with the pick up and he will last for years on small numbers.

.....no fires or having change bearings often....
.
Deutz GP 30 was the best old fixed chamber baler i ever used back in the day....wont find them now tho i guess gone for export etc

+1 on the Deutz GP230 - twin tie - bales anything from the finest short meadow hay to crappy old stemmy pasture cut for silage. IH with 68 hp will run it.

I ran a 550 for a contractor , good machine on a good day you could do 600 with net , but would always throw an un netted one maybe 1.5%of time , never found out why

Is there such a thing as an older style belt baler that can bale silage/haylage? I’ve a 2002 claas 255 rotocut and the bales ain’t great out of it. Would like to change it next year.... on a budget of about £6k[emoji1]. Or would like of a John Deere 568 be a good choice? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/223031786270
None of older belt balers like silage , maybe a newholland br740 etc but only if belts are endless and you have a decent regular swath , otherwise belts won't stand up

That's way over priced. In fact most on ebay are. Basically the same as a 578 but without the knives. You can pick up a tidy enough 575/578 for around the £3-4k mark these days from an auction in fact we paid not a lot more than that for a tidy combi 27k bales from a genuine farm sale. Second hand balers in the 10-15 year old bracket are abundant and cheap these days (except mchale) and very productive compared to old balers from the 70s, 80s and early 90s

Would definitely recommend a 578. Not a contractors machine for 20k bales a year but a great value farmers baler so long as you don't need to bale straw with it

what are you baling with the claas for the bales to be not great

Mostly just haylage/ dry silage, I actually think there’s an issue with the door pressure control valve as it drops away very quickly once closed which will make a big difference if sorted I’m sure. But they get a fair bashing on here for not making great bales so I was thinking an upgrade would be an idea [emoji848][emoji1]

Ah I see! I’ll keep an eye out for o[emoji4]a tidy 578 then[emoji106]..... what’s a high bale count on one of these machines? 50,000 bales?

you do know you have to blip the spool to shove the pressure up about half way through making a bale ?

they do get a bashing on here but I have had a 250 two 255's and now have a 355 and they have been good balers for me though the 250 would run bearings as they were not greaseable

I get on well with my 255, but I'm not doing that many bales, 1000 a year on average. I thought it was a huge leap forward from my RP12, but it looks as if it is considered "old hat" now! :)

i had a john deere 575 up till the start of this year and i will defintaly recomend it, i had it 3 years done many thousand bales and all i had to do was the old roller bearing and one chain, this was my first baler and started baling on the country with her, i have now bought myself a lely 235 profi and it is in a different leaugue of a baler, however its also in a different league price wise. My john deere was £2700 the day i bought her 3 years ago

You're asking the wrong person there but I would imagine they are getting past their best by then. Also worth considering a welger rp 220 or vicon 230/235 as they have good reputations too and not overly pricey either

and the pressure is still dropping back ?
I knock the valve automatically now I have done so many bales with these balers I would have a job not to do it

I can’t actually remember now, I’ll be bailing later in the week so I’ll see better then. I think it does drop off though [emoji22]

claas 46rota cut here, bought second hand for around 4k iirc put new pick up tines on the outer 3 bands both sides and its now unblockable. Simple to use. Put the knives in on silage and hay, more to make feeding easier, as the cattle don't pull long stuff out into the sh1t.

I do have another 46, not as well specced though, Standard 4ft pick up, no rotor cut but it does have net tie. Its been sat in the shed 2years and is looking for work. Pm me if you want.
