No coal or wet wood, what ever next.

In reality, council will send some clipboarded pansy to every registered burner on their list and check . Sigh.
Nope, it's a ban on the sale of wet wood & bituminous coal for domestic use - not the the use of it.

You can tell this crap was thought out. Who burns wet wood in a wood burner for fs
Bet your life they will come up with a tax next.
A large portion of wood burner owners don't have a clue!

It's stupid to burn wet wood - anything over 10-15% moisture - because it fouls not only the air, but also your stove and flue. And you don't get the heat out of it that you do if the wood is dry. This is common knowledge, but it's the usual case of laws being brought in to save us from stupid people. There are plenty of them out there, all townies.

Like all such laws, the idiot few hurt the sensible many. This one penalises those people with common sense who buy green firewood cheaper and season it themselves.

As Bald Rick says, sell a can of beans and throw in a free load of green logs.

It's the hypocrisy of things like this that's interesting. Here's the 'expert' reacting to this proposed new law: "We know that air pollution causes significant health issues across the life course. It is key that the government does everything it can to improve the air we all breathe." So when will the government do something about this?:

I wish out beloved Telford Council EHO would make a visit to the local company that makes sheds, seats etc from treated timber and then sells dumpy bags full of the stuff as firewood!!! From the look of the stuff, wet AND toxic!

You’d struggle to get wood down to your 10-15% in the north of the UK by nature’s way of seasoning fire wood .
Wood under 25% burns ok but should be under 20% .
I’m a fire wood merchant these days being doing commercially for 20 years or so now.
These new rules will affect Garages B&Q and the like selling pee wet nets of logs that you can hardly lift.
I’ll admit at the moment as I’ve had a decent season I’m struggling to get dry wood to cut and split . The timber I’ve got stored outside is dry but the outside it wet due to the weather conditions we have had recently.
Kiln drying logs is a joke using fuel to dry fuel and getting paid for in in this country.

Someone needs to repost that photo they took from their farm of the freight train hauling North American timber to Drax. Now that does want banning.
We do logs, if i've heard it right the ban is on selling small volumes ? Fine, we will sell the customer a m3 in one go, and deliver it throughout the winter as and when they want it.

Can I still attend a steam traction engine rally ? What ever will power " The Flying Scotsman " ? I am sorry to witness the new minister coming out with unthought out laws.

It might encourage diy stores to store their "dry" wood properly, indoors, out of the rain.

It won't stop idiots burning scavenged tanalised, treated, or painted wood, though.

Small volumes is anything less than 2m3 at a time. Have guaranteed my logs are less than 20%MC for over a decade now but by the looks of it I will need to pay for red tape to register and prove the point.

... in November 2019, China had 121 gigawatts of coal fired power stations under construction.

Meanwhile old Mrs Peters in Cumbria is about to be fined for putting a lump of anthracite on her open fire to warm her chilled bones

So let me see, my customers have a builders bag or 2 at a time, thats three quarters of a m3 per bag. So I guess I'll just have to bill them for 3 or more bags at the beginning of winter and store the extra ones for them until they need them delivered..........:D:D

No, Mrs Peters will be OK. Anthracite is not bituminous, and burns cleanly. Open fires are not efficient nor clean by stove standards
The entire story of the required standards is not new news. It has been resting in the in tray of the DEFRA minister for several years. George must have reached that layer in his enthusiasm to do the job!
Modern stoves are DEFRA approved if they meet the required efficiency, and are required to use 'approved' wood, that is defined as dry to 18%.
Bituminous coal has never been a suitable fuel for stoves.
There is a higher standard, known as eco-ready, which would have been adopted in 2022 if we remained in the EU. It has not yet been accorded UK accreditation.
I doubt whether your local council will be pro-active, any more than they have regarding the pre-existing Clean Air Acts.
Farms, as businesses, also have the Environment Protection Act to comply with, regarding combustion waste.

Well, it has been in consultation for quite a while, so it's not exactly down to the new minister.

As for steam engines - they aren't domestic users so don't come under these rules.
