Producers have to realise that the days of when egg prices averaged between 95 pence to £1/doz, when any fool could make have gone. Now you have to be a top producer to make any money. It's similar to the beef, sheep and cereals farms when subsidies go.
Subsidy’s for beef sheep cereals went years ago.

I think that there may be a single farm payment or some such for the land involved in those enterprises though unlike the concrete and buildings based chicken and pig operations.
As @Henarar would say, there's a sub on the land that is used to grow their food, same as there is for chickens. Up to each farmer whether they grow their own food or buy it in. Plenty of cattle finishers with just concrete and sheds who buy in all their feed. Even some store lamb finishers the same.

Scale?
Some would have access to cheap(er) waste materials - veg, bread, etc.

But on the wider point, what's the difference between a cattle finisher renting land to grow food for his cattle and a chicken producer renting land to grow wheat for his chickens? Both would be able to claim the sub.
