Cambridgeshire County Council Farms

Anyone with any experience they could share?

Do your own figures in the workbooks provided so that when you get to interview you know what they actually mean!

Since I got my farm, the council have largely left me alone, as Adeptandy says, the sheds are well maintained but on the small side.

If you want a new shedt they add the cost to your rental at a hefty interest rate I believe. Also, they seem to use sub-contractors who do everything at lowest cost, doubtless charging top price.

I have two years left on my five year FBT before choosing whether or not to renew. Since I took over here the reduction in BPS has been announced and the sugar beet industry seems to have collapsed, so renegotiations are going to be 'interesting'!

I think that if the council are intending on maintaing or even increasing rent levels, then tenants are going to have to take some hard decisions?

Would have to be a somewhat small flying flock, to base it around a 20 acre field abs a three bay shed. Would be no doubt handy to add to an existing operation but working out what profit you would make off 20 acres is a bit like a small holder trying to work out if they should charge £1.20 or £1.40 for a box of eggs.

there's a member on here running at least a thousand ewes.....just has a 17 ac field at back of his house as a base ;)

And how much of the Buisness profit does that 17 acres provide ?

I run 1200-1500 ewes and have my back garden which is probably 100 m by 50m and my garage as a base, but I can’t really claim that it’s providing much profit.

Also you made the point that it’s by his house, and hence a useful base. Not removed from where he lives .....

Out of curiosity, when you say he runs 1000 ewes and has a 17 acre field as a base, what role does the 17 acre field play? Lamb a small number and put a few sick sheep in?

Sorry I may have come over a wee bit aggressive. I’m just always interested in the practicalities of peoples situations as you here a lot of impressive stuff, just like to know the nitty gritty of the claims. Seen plenty of impressive claims made on here, which if you know the reality of the situation, are obviously Jackanory 😂

you're alright :) ....i've been round his flock on a vet group visit,,,just can't remember his name:bag:......i'm very fortunate to own a little farm so ignorant....i just thought 20ac + some sheds would be a decent base....if you run 1500 ewes outta garage + back garden fair play(y)

hope things getting better after that rough time BTW:)
