Engine turning oil black

I often drive a lorry, have noticed that the oil always smells burnt and is very black. Even the day after it has been changed. But the engine uses no oil or water at all between changes so what's up with it? Oil Changed 3 times per year

Better the oil been black than the inside of your engine, if the oil is capturing and holding carbon deposits it’s doing it’s job well. Does it have an oil spinner on it?

When does it not lubricate so well though? Should it be changed every month? Seems a bit overkill
As long as the oil is to the manufacturers specifications it should continue to lubricate for the length of the service interval, oil can break down over time as well though hence they usually specify x number of miles/hours or every year etc. As @ACEngineering says it doesn’t do any hurt to change it a little bit sooner if it on a long life interval.
The filter and spinner are there to remove any large debris that could do potential harm to internal components so I wouldn’t worry to much as long as there’s no other signs of a problem like heavy breathing, burning oil, knocking etc.

The engine is running and pulling well, the time the thermostat stuck open the oil went like tar and wouldn't even drip off the dipstick but its OK now again apart from the burnt smell!

To be honest when ever I’ve done anything on a wagon engine (I do tend to do that much with them these days) the oil has always had a burn smell to it! I don’t know but it could be something to do with the low rpm they tend to run at?

Might be to do with the DPF Regen and EGR etc etc too, new van has an oil temp gauge on the dash, normally sits around 90 deg but other day it was at 97deg when i think it was doing a regen. Seems fairly hot to me!

I notice the old JD6310 and the ancient DB995 working in the sawmill keep clean oil for some weeks after a change, whereas the newer JDs on the farm go black the minute you fire em up. Presume it's summat to do with them breathing their own farts to control emissions.

Newer engines seem worse for it. Have an N14 cummins at work that even after 200hrs the engine oil is only just changing colour and still has a gold tinge to it where as 7530 deeres day after its serviced oils black.
