Camera mirrors

So it's getting common for hgv type vehicles to have small cameras and monitors instead of mirrors.
Clever stuff. Saves having a big expensive mirror stuck out of the side of the cab and can be made to follow the rear of a trailer when reversing. Etc.
Surely for tractors and telehandlers it could be an excellent option. No big mirrors to catch on hedges and other obstacles. No rain or frost making mirrors nearly useless. No banging your head getting in the cab. Having the ability for it to follow a trailer as it reverses.
And the big one is telehandlers. You could basically see through the boom so there is no blind spot.
I assume some downsides to the technology somewhere but seems agriculture would really benefit.

Has staff knocked a mirror off today? Is that what made you think?

That's the main issue with vision on side boom telehandler. You would think health and safety people would make them compulsory.
I saw on a manitou at the Yorkshire show that it had a rear facing camera on the bottom of the mirror arm. Good idea I thought just have to get around to purchasing one for mine.

Our manitou has a camera on the back that automatically comes on when in reverse & also one under the boom side mirror. Our local dealer seems to sell a lot with that option. I’d miss it if i didn’t have it.

Here is a Mercedes video of how they work.

I've seen a few of these on the motorway and was very dubious till watching that video, absolutely awesome how it will always see the entire length of the trailer! Does the camera 'arm' stick out as far as a conventional mirror?

What happens when that get bashed off down some horrible lane on the way to a farm? Then surely can't legally carry on till it's fixed, how quick would you get up and running again as opposed to popping a new glass in or simply folding the mirror arm back out?!

I'm all for it though, we've started fitting cameras to a lot of our gear, makes life so much easier!

Cant really see the point in them, just another thing to go wrong.

I seen a video the other day of an artic getting recovered by a big wrecker because his camera/mirrors had gone off, bet the recovery cost was 10 times what a new standard mirror would be.
