All the heat is going up the flue, anyway. OK like that for the first 20 minutes but air vents need to be closed down until the flame is a gentle flicker. Second picture is better. If you have one set like that, get one of the wood burner fans on top
Good luck finding a HETAS engineer that will sign off a rear exit flue pipe. They always now seem to insist on a top exit for at least 750mm long straight pipe before a angled turn in the pipe.

We have a 5kw burley cracking little burner, fill it with a decent log at 9pm and it's still hot at 7am, chuck in a new log open the vent and it roars into life, not the cheapest but well worth the cost.Burley stoves are top exit only and they are amongst the most efficient on the market.
So plainly there is no hard and fast rule.
Do you close the vent right down at night? We have a 5kw burley cracking little burner, fill it with a decent log at 9pm and it's still hot at 7am, chuck in a new log open the vent and it roars into life, not the cheapest but well worth the cost.
Yes door closed tight vent right down, usually with ash or oak log but burn a lot of dry willow during the day, I have had it going for nearly two wks without it going out on a fair few occasions before it needs cleaningDo you close the vent right down at night?
Is there much heat off willow? Have got some here but didn’t think it would be worth cutting up.Yes door closed tight vent right down, usually with ash or oak log but burn a lot of dry willow during the day, I have had it going for nearly two wks without it going out on a fair few occasions before it needs cleaning
