Pedigree Beltex Sheep

Hello Everyone!
Can anyone offer me some advice on Beltex sheep and answer the following questions for me:

1. Best concentrate to feed housed Beltex? ratios, quantity etc.
2. Best supplements, licks etc. for Beltex?
3. Breeding regime? e.g. introduction of ram, feeding in late pregnancy etc.
4. Best Beltex crosses
5. Most popular Beltex rams/tups

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank You

1. Singles just hay or silage , Twins , same conc as you would feed anything else .
2. Standard mineral licks my singles just have salt licks .
3. Won’t be cycling properly naturally until end of September , so then onwards unless want to sponge and mosh etc .
4. Beltex cross well with a Charolais or texel , or cheviot.
5. Ones that are naturally bred and survive

10 years of breeding them commercially . Takes a while to breed out the rubbishand keep what suits your farm (not just with them , with any bought in breeds) . But when you’ve got them right youl be pleased with them !

what intrigues me is the 4 way cross @spin cycle must be developing with his shedders, Icelandic, Shetland and now beltex....
It's a ploy..........

.............he reckons if he can breed 'em with big enough @rses it'll cure his 'escape' problem 'cos they'll not be able to get through the holes....

...........a few like this will 'plug' the holes and stop the rest getting out too. It's a win/win situation. That @spin cycle really is a Blue Sky Thinker :playful:

I’ve never realy understood the idea behind Millenium Bleus. The 2 breeds in the cross being polar opposites will surely mean that the first cross rams look great, but the next cross will give you some little Beltex types, alongside some godawful lanky Bleu types.:scratchhead:
The same applies with all crossbred tups derived from dissimilar breeds. I’ve seen plenty of variability in the few Charollais x Beltex tups I’ve bred here, and the next cross can only become more variable...

There's more variation within a breed than between breeds anyway, so when you cross 2 together you just double the variation. Or inconsistency. :banghead:

1. Best concentrate to feed housed Beltex? ratios, quantity etc.

bog standard 16% cake and sugar beet 1:1
Singles - high energy lick like Lifeline
Twins - 1/2lb per head x2 daily
Triplets - 3/4lb per head x2 daily

2. Best supplements, licks etc. for Beltex?

lifeline or similar

3. Breeding regime? e.g. introduction of ram, feeding in late pregnancy etc.

Don’t think this is a question you can address in isolation. There’s a whole range from late lambing to go for the shearling market where you’d just turn the tups into teased ewes on the 1st October, to sponging for AI and ET work in early August for ram lamb/showing

4. Best Beltex crosses

The right type of Texel

5. Most popular Beltex rams/tups

Don’t know. I suspect the type I’d chose would be more Texelly than would be the norm, probably so Texelly you’d be better off with a Texel.
