Touareg?

We looked seriously at getting a Toureg or Q7 (essentially the same vehicle) last Spring but, looking at lots of forums etc, was put off by the potential of huge bills at high mileage. Ended up getting a Q5, but it won’t be towing like the bigger one would.
The same applies with all those types of vehicles, which is why you get a lot of car for the money.

If you’re feeling lucky, go for it. If you’re on a £5k budget, be prepared to scrap it if you do get one of those bills and start again perhaps. It might never happen.

Pretty sure they are, as well as in Audi and many others. They are good gearboxes, but expensive when they do go wrong.
Aisin Warner auto in our 2016 Touareg. ZF auto mated to same V6 engine in Amarok though. Don’t know about the Audis.

We’ve got one 3L v6 new in 2011
It’s done around the 120 thousand miles mark. my wife has taken it ,through a lot of mud in its life around the fields and she has not managed to get it stuck yet , (we keep it on winter tyres all year round,) which has been amazing. This year was the first big maintenance expense, which we had done because I didn’t think the ride, as not as good as it used to be ,just lost its Mojo, so we had pair of new shock absorber on the rear end, and made ride back like a new car. which cost us 700 quid with labour and genuine VW parts .
We still have a big soft spot for this vehicle and it will not be leaving us for a very long time. It just keeps going on and on.
We did buy a new freelander 2 auto on a 57 plate, but ,she only kept it for 18 months, as she did not like it one little bit. so in between she purchased herself, a nice little sports car, but then she wanted vw Touareg.

If it was my money for that budget I’d go Range Rover. You can get some serious low mileage tbv8 for that money. Way better than toured and so many spurious parts about.

expensive when they break though - surely a Disco 3 would be better at the budget ?

eh ? who the heck would do that , ? some people must have more money than sense .

What would you do with a £5k car that needed £5k+ of work on the autobox when it went bang? That is a distinct possibility at high miles, and why they are devalued so much in the first place.

It's beyond fixing with a bent nail and some string.

I have had a number of Touaregs. The 2.5 5 cylinder diesel is bomb proof and excellent Auto / or manual box makes no difference.
They can develop strange expensive problems however. On one occasion all brakes locked themselves on automatically on a single track country lane. The computer did not like the previous muddy field so took control. Low loader recovery arrived and we winched vehicle onboard and off to the garage. £600 pounds later that week vehicle was back on the road with a reprogrammed c & new brake sensors.
Some models are £ 675 per annum RFT. Others £365.

Only real gotcha on the 3.0 V6 TDI is timing chains and camshaft wear. Anything that sounds funny or doesn't go well, walk away.
I like to add turbos, pro shafts and oil breather diaframs and injectors great engine when there working but over 100k they have loads expensive faults in your budget personals I would avoid. They seem ok to 100k though just not built to last and very irritating/expensive to work on with exception of turbo very easy to swap.
