So is this stagflation?

Here in the U.S. we have no fiscal responsibility, by all calculations we will soon be paying one trillion, (yes, one trillion $$) per year in interest alone.
Any politician who runs on a platform of reducing debt gets no traction at all.
Its like a death wish..........I don't get it.
Wont they just write it off one day ?

Your economy is in trouble and your lawmakers seem inept at correcting it which does not bode well for the future
As with most situations there are many factors that have brought you to this point, just reading thru the various threads on this site shows a scary amount of regulation that only serves to dumb down the spirit
Your energy costs are unbelievable which must put a severe crimp in any budget. (net zero is expensive)
Any mature economy struggles to balance the needs of the population while encouraging a vibrant economy but as the world enters the next revolution are your leaders smart enough to capture that pot of gold.
And all it needs is devaluation of the £pound, and we all sink together.

Seriously their is that likelihood that loss of confidence by investors leads to a run on the pound and then we wont afford so much imports. Unfortunately don't export that much now so wont be able to gain from more exports.
Mm. we are going to sink!

I found out recently that the foundry I did my apprenticeship in has banned hammers, the fitters now have to hide said hammers and things that are struck by hammers, anyone with any kind of engineering experience knows how fundementaly ridiculous this situation is. This is just one example of this insideous cancer thats pervaded in recent years. No wonder productivity is so low, and it won't get any better so far as I can see, nobody seem to have any kind of industrial strategy, just sound bites and woke nonsense.

Latest inflation figures 4%. Latest today on the economy, it’s officially in recession.

That cant be right. Today's Daily Express, that bastion of unbiased journalism, has a front page calling for Jeremy Hunt to take the brakes off as the economy is on the up.

A cynic might think that they went with that, knowing that the growth figures were due out this morning showing a second quarter of contraction (technically making it a recession), so that the byelection voters would read it early today...

indeed............but this our children's future we are putting at stake, how stupid can we get.
Roger don't you know its immigrants future we're putting at stake because people aren't having children anymore. (I write that as a joke but it is pretty fudging serious and its the same across this country, your country and the western and developed world as far as I am aware).

Why have they banned hammers?

Can't see it making a jot of difference unless it was nationalised ( which it wouldn't be,) so would be just sold on world market price at no benefit to UK🤷
Well, the UK did very well from North Sea Oil revenues.... It was what allowed the Country to "prosper" and keep head above water for 2 decades and reduce Debt.

On using the UK's own oil, gas and coal reserves, the problem is that communities see Zero benefits from the first 2 whatsoever, our Govt tax the production companies, and the production companies are allowed a bit of profit. But allow say, a Parish area to see real and tangible benefits from fracking site, and views might change.

The problem comes from the State "owning" all mineral reserves underground. Not right at all, IMO.

UK economy is entering a phase where you simply can't increase productivity. And as folk age and retire, it's likely govt borrowing to pay for services will simply keep increasing.

Where's previously 60 oercent debt to GDP was prudent, we've seen western govts go to 100 percent. The next step will see this be the norm until some bright spark finds a way to off-book some more govt liabilities and take it to 125.

Then, as voters age, they will simply kick the can higher and higher.

Councils go bust - do they get liquidated or merged? No they up council tax ten percent and cull almost every service.

Fiscal discipline and productivity growth have gone down the shitter now in the UK

"Innovative financial mechanism.."

The Yanks aren't usually afraid to spend big to keep the economy going but we won't have that ability
