I always respond to email/voicemail enquiries within the hour (or often 15 mins) to ascertain the nature of their call and how I can help, ‘live’ phone calls are immediate

Once that has been ascertained, a mutual action plan for follow up information or quote is agreed for the same day and to fit in with their work schedule (not mine) as they are the customer

If it’s a quote for something and I am in the offices, I usually get back to them in 5-10 minutes to satisfy their enquiry and then text/email them the confirmation details so they have it both verbally/written

I interrupt my day for new enquiries and stop what I am doing to deal with their requests

That’s the way it should be

Customer service is key to any business-however in agriculture there are some firms with shocking customer service attributes and attitudes
Alot seem to know they will be paid regardless if they act on a call or not...so can let plenty through to the keeper and still get paid.

Is it just oz?? I believe ive seen some well warranted moaning on here as well from UK 🇬🇧, is it a global thing in the western world now??

Pretty much now if they day they call back i keep on searching as it is very rare iget a call back...im only a small farmer in the scheme of things but i do spend a decent amount of dollars annualy.

Ant...

Not just ag though to be fair. I rang a local Vw commercial vehicle dealer about a demo vehicle they had in stock. By the time they bothered to get back to me I’d bought a brand new one from a small independent dealer and had it delivered from 200 miles away.

I've a small share in a pretty esoteric engineering firm. It's a decent size with a few dozen employees now, so not small but not massive either; good turnover, lots of orders placed well in advance by clients.

One of the founding partners made an office rule when they started, late 90s, that all calls and post enquiring about business would be put on a board on the wall and given a number, only to be removed when it had been marked replied to and either resulted in nothing or an order placed - which saw it entered on another board.

After a few years, as the business grew, this was replaced by a system like in the old-fashioned air-traffic control towers; this involves mini strips of baton going in a rack with the enquiry details written on them. Again, only to be removed if nothing happens or if moved, this time to another rack.

Over twenty years later they have still got that same system, despite nearly all comm's now being electronic. There is a rack for an initial contact, the next for a reply, the next for if an order is going to happen, then more racks for the various stages until completion.

I guess there are half a dozen full time office staff, plus others from the shop or management in and out too; point is, all can immediately see the progress of every contact from first to last. And, since the responsibility for most steps is pretty clearly divided up, everyone can see others are doing their jobs well and know that the same can be said of them.

It may seem odd nowadays that such a system is still extant, but it works, so why not? :)
I bet they get fed up with all the batons left in the rack after they've quoted and called the enquirer back and they are just ghosted.............

Works two ways

Yes but sometimes there’s no point replying when you get a ludicrous quote. I enquired about a stock Vw Amarok. Registered Sept 23. 6000 miles. 2 registered owners already and when I get the quote the price was £69,999 + vat. I’m sorry but I’m not replying to that verbal diarrhea. The one sat in the yard now was brand new, no previous owners, delivery mileage and was well over £20,000 + vat cheaper. The difference was a body kit. There’s taking the p**s and taking the p**s but come on ……..

They followed up with a call after a few days and the opening line was ‘let’s get you into this truck’. A complete and utter bozo. That truck is still for sale today now with 8500 miles on it and I guess a salesman using it as his own car.

Well there's two sides to that

Fair enough if a farmer has NO clue as to the cost of what I sell, however if I or one of my team expend time on preparing a proposal (1-5 hours typically) and / or a site visit, the very least that is fair is for someone to answer a phone call follow up . Yes folks can be busy with a calving, family incident, harvest etc but to blank an incoming phone call after a few times is just wrong in my book. And yes it does happen and yes it does happen more than you'd think

Now you can say well he's just a rep and part of the game and to a certain extent you're right but I will say there's two sides to most stories

Separately, on another wall there is the elegantly titled 'Sh!t list' with known time-wasters etc. on, I can't recall if there is a rack for something merely irritating, but I don't think so.

I like to send an email instead of calling, but when I am in a hurry I call. They pick up 75 percent of the time at a guess, then I call back in an hour or so. No pick up then no business or I have to be desperate. They call back half of the time and when they don't call back the same day it won't happen at all 99.9 percent.
I haven't seen it get any better or worse, has been this way for a long time, Idon't complain.

Having a big problems with anyone ringing or emailing back. Had parts we need sat waiting to be picked up for weeks because when you ring up they say someone will get back to you or not in yet, but when you go in to get something else, get told its been sat there. Latest one is roller shutter door, emailed, got a quote, rang to say happy to go ahead. Bloke came out to check measurements but suggested some changes, I said fine send me a adjusted quote. That was 4 weeks ago and nothing no contact. I've give up chasing on everything. Found out to day from a chap that works there the door was made on Tuesday, don't know to what spec or price unless to the original quote but I don't what that anymore. He said, but I must have paid a deposit, they won't order any parts till they get one. They're going to be in for a shock when I say I don't what it when they eventually ring up
