I know this has been asked before but havent seen anyone mention a west side spreader, obviously wont be the prettiest of spread but is it worth it just for a few acres? i can get lime delivered fine but its not worth getting a contractor out to spread it. cheers
The Expression of Interest (EOI) window for the Spring Sown Growing for the Environment opened yesterday and closes on the 18th November 2022. The minimum grant award is equivalent to the payment rate for 1ha of eligible crop, and the maximum grant is £5,000. EOI's must be submitted via your RPW...
Livestock farming has an elephant in the room......
Static beef price, and lamb struggling to hold it's own, how do we afford fertiliser at £1000 a tonne???
I just cannot see how to cut inputs and still have enough income to cover feed, fuel and fertiliser increases???
Is everyone in the...
I note today in The Sunday Times that Kaleb has done a deal with Severn Trent Water to supply excreta to Jeremys Farm. I am aware of injecting waste water into the soil but JC mentions the more solid product as a fertilizer .What rates do people apply to the soil/crops and when and how.?
With soil health promoted as being key to future agricultural policy (plus new measures of success for agriculture being developed), we want to work with farmers and together get ahead of the game identifying and supporting healthy soils.
Most farmers think of a healthy soil as one which...
Sowing a meadow for a client, area of roughly 370 m/sq. Conducted soil tests at 5 evenly spaced sites in proposed meadow area. Only nutrient level of concern is Potassium which is sitting at about K0.5 - looking to raise to K1. The clients have previously tried to sow a wildflower meadow with...
There have been a lot of posts about quantification, certification and sale of Carbon and biodiversity natural capital on the forum over the last couple of years and the SFI has made us all aware of these previously hidden assets we all have on our farms both livestock and arable
It’s all very...
Nearly sure Iv asked this before but can’t be bothered searching back. Is there any easy cure for it other than sell sheep totally ? Have sold a portion already and wondering if more needs to go
Sorry for being a bore and repeating myself
Arable farmer suppling wheat straw in the row roughly 1.7 tons an acre.
livestock farmer bales and carts straw turns it into muck from bull beef so intensively fed. Then spreads it on stubble with no stockpile etc. with no cost or work from arable farmer
What tons of muck per acre would you...
Having paid much interest in ELMS and other environmental schemes, I realised that as a livestock farmer they offer me nothing.
As such I decided to simply carry on, in my own happy way, and ignore them all.
I realise now that this was a rather naïve and stupid thing to do as whether I claim or...
This is a thread for those who feel guilty about cluttering up dear old GUTH’s beloved price tracker with the chit chat that stop us all being that miserable our families would throw us all out to sit with the dog in the porch. All are welcome, you can even post prices if you want. The only rule...
Can we claim SFI if we have signed up to carbon schemes from the likes of Agreena, Trinity, Soil Capital etc? Sorry if i've missed this being covered elsewhere. Thanks
Hi all,
Looking for recommendations on the best way to get some totally unproductive very weed laden ( thistle, dock & general rubbish) ground into an arable rotation. It's useless to me in its current state after years of the previous owners ring feeding cattle on it 365 days a year.
Not sure...
Helping growers improve their soil health is an important part of the role we play at Truterra. While carbon and carbon programs seem to be stealing the spotlight in the media, it is not lost on us that increasing carbon sequestration leads to better soil health, which can lead to higher...
Why is this never discussed? Why is it always farming land that has to be re-wilded?
Is it because a lot of the people who support re-wilding also like horse riding. Surely a hobby shouldn't carry more weight than feeding a nation?
Good afternoon all,
I wanted to let you know that we've opened the Sustainable Farming Incentive for applications today.
You can find a summary of what's available in this initial rollout here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/a-summary-of-the-sfi-in-2022 - we'll be expanding the scheme to cover...
Is it dry as a nuns with anyone else? Another couple weeks without a decent rain and east yorkshires going to start turning brown, and I don't just mean the crops!
Heads up on another new Welsh grant has just been announced, with the rules published today.
