I received communication from the EA telling me that my holding had been selected for an on farm visit as part of an initiative to avoid polution and run off. I was told not asked to make an appointment in August or September by contacting the signatory of the letter.
I have nothing to hide or...
Apologies if already posted somewhere - a quick search hasn't revealed such a thread - but this is interesting and it may prove to be something big in the future:
After second-cut silage is a good time to spread lime on silage fields and correct any pH deficiencies to improve soil health.
Many farms are still waiting to harvest their second cuts of silage, with the wet weather delaying harvesting for many.
But once it has been harvested it is a good...
Afternoon all,
Today we've published a handbook containing all the detailed information about the sustainable farming incentive offer for this year.
The handbook is here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sfi-handbook-for-the-sfi-2023-offer
An overview blogpost is here...
So it’s clear from many other threads that SFI seemingly offers very little or nothing that’s attractive to livestock / grassland
so what do you want ? Use this thread to outline your own livestock / grassland SFI standard that both delivers public goods and natural capital for tax payers...
I am on panel chaired by David Exwood next week at the cereals event speaking with Janet Hughes
I have been asked to talk about my experience of Sfi pilot and Sfi so far .............. frankly I don't have a lot to say on that as it's been pretty straight forward other than issues around how...

Only posting this as I find it interesting. 3 different farms in 3 different counties.
All of them share the same soil type classification of Lime-rich loamy and clayey soils with impeded drainage
Each field had at least 1 lab sample taken, biggest field up to 4 samples. Lab pH results varied...
Our ground has a high clover content, but think it could do with an extra boost about now.
What fertiliser should I be putting on to avoid doing too much harm to the clover but still getting a boost of grass growth.
It’s only for sheep grazing.
Upland/ hill farm
Got some ground here that i think has just had constant sheep for too long. How much rest do folk think it would need to make a real difference? Couple of cuts of silage? Full year grazed with cattle? Or ploughed and cropped for a year or two?
Thoughts welcomed!

Obviously people must re-adjust applications based on prices of fert v grain.
How far and accurate do people try and do this?
Obviously know how much N was bought for, but what about grain price?
Did some calcs on ww - taking into accurate the soil N results - it'll need 85kg/ht!! With today's...

Our mowing meadows are all old pp, we have drained and limed ( thin soil over clay at 1000’ in the Pennines) muck spread as and when but no artificial fertiliser.
Slow growing meaning we get a light cut mid to late July , though it makes lovely sweet hayledge.
Downside is apart from may until...
