‘It’s ok, we are only pushing our bikes on this footpath so it’s ok”

Nope, categotically not legal. It's the sort of stupid statement wandering cyclists come out with, along with the "Right to Roam walkers...
I wonder what would happen, if I decided to push my bike through the aisles while I was shopping in Tesco!

On a more serious note, whenever I think of an issue like this, I remember my late grandmother being scared to walk on the pavement, due to cyclists cycling down them.

The trouble is it very much depends on how much the footpath is used, if it's only occasionally with the odd biker it's not really a problem but if you are one of the unlucky ones who see hundreds a day the last thing you want is bikers as well.
The rules need to be strict enough so that the unlucky few are not overwhelmed with the damage that follows, this might seem unfair but if farmers that aren't troubled decide to ignore the rules & allow extra that's up to them.

I caught 2 teenagers cycling round 1 of my grass fields a couple of weeks ago. When I challenged them the response from 1 was “ I didn’t know it was a f*** ing field did I“. My response was “it’s a big open space with green stuff growing in it called grass, what did you think it was?”
You couldn’t make it up. :banghead:

Cyclist have started using one of my cross field paths this last year. Nigh on impossible to police. They do cycle through the crops to swerve around walkers. Sub disc post harvest will steady them up a bit.😉

Plenty of councils trying to open up ROW to include mobility scooters, which would make them far easier for motorbikes etc. Dorset CC were trying it on with us on a claim started in 1973, paused and recently resurrected!
As a friend of a mobility scooter user. I strongly agree with Dorset CC. My mate only leaves his house to go for a ride. The difference it makes is incredible. We haven’t all got 1000 acre gardens!

Without meaning to be disrespectful to your friend, how do you envisage them getting safely through the middle of my cow dispersal yard which is where the footpath runs on our farm?

It’s not as simple as just making paths accessible to all. It becomes a massive issue for those of us that have to deal with the implications of these bright ideas.

I am happy to welcome walkers through our farm providing they act responsibly but runners, cyclists etc are very much given both barrels because a herd of cows that have been spooked are a very dangerous proposition particularly to the average Joe out on a jolly.

As has been said, where does it stop and how long do you turn a blind eye?
We have a footpath runs through some woodland that use to have a stone quarry in so plenty of slopes that the mountain bikers like. Trouble is it’s now videos all over Facebook and you get the other types of bikes turning up! Took these off some lads not to long ago for the police to impound!

Then stopped this lad flying up and down the track leading to the wood weaving in between walkers 🤬

Thought it was ok though because he’d pushed it down the road to get there 🤦‍♂️

Friend of mine lost their cattle for several days after the local running club ran through the field en masse clad in their hi-viz reflective gear. Eventually turned up in a field a few farms away.

😡😡😡😡

how do you respond to that moment in a dignified way!?
Installed dog proof styles at each end of our Farms footpath, with lovely kissing gates at the 4 field boundaries there after.... keeps the foot path officer happy that every one can pass legally, the wife happy that she doesn't need to climb a style or open a field gate when walking our dogs, and keeps me happy as it stops the mountain bikers and the commercial dog walkers off ours and on the easier arable path that runs round our patch.... win win.
However never begrudge the genuine walker from their walk through ours as they never cause an issue.

Never begrudge them through mine either. Have hoards of kids going through doing their DoE and they are fine, well behaved, polite, no litter etc. (completely different story with the adults that supervise them though). Worst of the kids was from a school in Stockport, apples off trees and thrown all over the place, several electric fencing stakes about the place which weren't mine, just general kids stuff really and even then I figured it had improved their world for a day at least.

It is not an offence to cycle along a footpath but it a trespass against the owner. It's a civil offence, not criminal. As I stated in post #2, any 'proceedings' would be a civil matter between the owner and the cyclist(s), and of concern to nobody else. Good luck in this modern age with 'taking a cyclist to court' to prove trespass

The kissing gate idea seems to be a good one - except that our local PROW officers want to see more and more access for the disabled where new or replacement 'structures' are concerned
