He can legally drive any tractor trailer combination on the road at 17 and as long as he has also passed his car test.

However, just because it’s legal doesn’t mean I will let him. He will need to prove himself in the field and show himself to be mature enough to take the job on. Even then he will be escorted by me on front on the other machine.
I got put on quad track when I was 17 which was a ludicrous learning curve being asked to cultivate and subsoil on rape I think we were farming 1400ha at the time! Dad used to come and he would move the quad between farms whilst I escorted it. Good times!

Thank your lucky stars you have a son intrested in the business!!! Or more importantly that your missus isint hellbent on kepping him away from dirty work . My lad will turn 15 this year and despite my wifes objections he will start ploughing this spring and hopefully be a help at the weekends and holidays .
Encourage dont force or he`ll rebel and refuse, dont be like so many farmers and forget to pay him or dont quote the old BS "It`ll all be yours one day so you`ll be paid then" .

I remember sitting in your kitchen with your parents talking about your amazing mother’s work with the local care farm. I think at this point you were driving something Vaderstadt and had just ripped off another tire!!! Made me smile as you have turned out alright!

I’ve just read @Simon Chiles comments on a different thread and he says the same about the car licence being irrelevant.

I’ve definitely been told that the car licence is required by both a VOSA official and a policeman.
Why and I presume it’s to do with speed can a 17 year old drive a 31 ton gross tractor and trailer when a 17 year old can’t tow over 750 kgs trailer behind car:truck without passing a trailer test???

There’s a fair few coppers out and about who haven’t a clue about the actual law. I’ve even attended meetings where they have been giving lectures on the law and have got it wrong. I‘d like to think VOSA officers were better informed, they certainly had a major campaign to bring officers up to speed with the finer details of ag machines on the road. If you want to discuss it with me you can always phone me.
