Something in that price range will be a fair age or have a million hours, so it's going to have some issues. If you're on a time critical job like silage and it's the only thing you have that can pull the wagon, can you handle downtime, especially if contracting?
Always a chance of a major failure such as an engine or transmission as well.
They all break down
i agree with you on some of that,we do all our own repairs and because im using older machines i keep a spare machine ,we have 3 wagons but one is always left in the yard hooked to a tractor ,we also have a spare loader and a spare mower and its not for the amount of acres we are doing its as you say down time on a fine day,if i wasnt addicted to spanners i would have newer gear and maybe hire a big tractor for six weeks

But shiny paint is all that matters now
Make do and mend farmers are seen as the great unwashed now.
Shiny paint and neck deep in payments is the only way now

I don't think that at all, I'm in favour of the older, less complicated stuff but you have to run it differently, especially if you're contracting. Tractors and equipment need proper preventative maintenance not fix when fail. Some people don't like replacing brakes before they break up or rebuilding a motor when it's showing signs of wear and its a quiet time. "we'll get a bit more wear out of that" Isn't the right way to go when contracting. Same with machines, strip them and rebuild them in winter, they'll keep going. Grease them and hope they last another year and they'll let you down.

the strip and rebuild i agree with we have taken the heads off 3 nh tractors and replaced the valves we did the brakes on two we replaced the damper on two and we put a set of syncros in one and we might have got away without doing any of this for a few more years but we find a few hours in the winter is better than being broke on the fine day also things like brakes going or dropping a valve can cost thousands instead of hundreds

Sounds like you'll be fine with and older one then.

Always liked the 8000 series Deere's myself. Plenty of examples running with very high hours.

yes but when we get a wet day after a fine spell then there is an awful lot of repairs to be done ,the other reason im looking for an older tractor is after tier 3 they get very complicated ,are the 8000 series all ps or can you get a pq trans

You seem to be agreeing with me.
