300hrs/year loader

We need a loader backup for 500 hours per year, loading grain, straw etc. Should we long term hire or buy? All our attachrments are Jcb but I’m happy to swap headstocks so the colour of the machine is irrelevant. Had a hire price for a brand new machine for 5 years at £640/month includes all service and warranty so total spend of £38,400 but obviously we’ve nothing to sell at the end but likewise no repair costs.
What could we buy for £38,400 that would be worth something after 5 years and another 2500 hours and that won’t cost in repairs?

I bought a JCB 530/70 for £18 k with 4500 hrs on it last year, it nor has 500 hrs more on it trouble free , and from this models reputation it won’t give trouble for years , in 5 years time it will still be worth £15 k , hopefully have cost very little in repairs , they are more reliable than the newer models. Cheap loading compared to your figures.

I bought an immaculate 5yr old, 2000hr JCB 541-70 privately for mid 40s, any machine I found listed by dealers had twice as many hours on for the same price. I know these kind of machines are few and far between but they can be found if you have time on your side.

If you had been looking 6 months ago I could've sold you my very tidy 11yr old 4200hr Manitou on q-fit for mid 20s, mute point but gives you an idea on values perhaps

This will be no help at all ....
I know there's a Chinese manufacturer
of a wide range of loaders trying to get a foothold into the UK market where a new machine can be bought for less than s/h well known brand

If It's a backup machine I'd be tempted by a basic construction spec 2010-2012 531-70 or the like. Can get one with less than 3k hours for £20k.

No good if you don't want the slower hydraulics or need a pickup hitch though.

ever given that machine a whirl clamping silage James, was wondering would it manage a 9ft fork

It can be done but they get hot if you drive like you stole them. I worked on a place where we had 3 machines of that size, generally two would be on the clamp at a time. Steady pushing up and rolling.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a second hand one. First year of hire of one should pay for the depreciation on something used sub 8-10 year old

Must be plenty of choice about

Why don't you use the hire machine as your main machine and keep the your owned machine as the backup

Because the hire price is for 500hrs/year. It’ll go up if we increase the hours.

we are looking at this as a combined thing though as our machine does 1500hrs so we are effectively taking 500 off it whilst making life a lot easier. So the hire cost becomes part of our total loader costs if that makes sense.

£15 hour on hired machine. £38k over 5 years for 2500 hours seems dear to me. Your not very far off a nearly new 2.5 ton 6m telehandler there. You would have to be pretty unlucky to get repair bills over £5k for 2500 hr telehandler.

We need 7m reach. I should of mentioned that initially. Our concern with buying is we purchase for £38,000 now and in 5 years time it’s worth £10,000 but because we’ve bought used we’ve spent £10,000 on repairs meaning it’s cost us £38,000 anyway and had the hassle of it breaking down.
Local mechanic says any loader gearbox will be £5k minimum repair so he’s saying look for one without a puh. He also said you can soon rack up a £2k bill for engine issues so is it worth the risk?

I bought a 5year old 2700hr 741 manitou for not much more than £38000 I sold my old 15year old manitou 741 for £17000 I’d be surprised if in 10 years time it’s not worth £10000 unless it has no cab on and only 3 wheels. Hire is a fixed cost but not always the cheapest option in my opinion.

It won't be worth 10k. Nearly all handlers that have been looked after with a good lift capacity are worth £20k at bottom
