A general purpose torque wrench

Had a few cases involving wheels coming off moving vehicles, and had a wheel pass me on the motorway: thankfully not mine!
We tighten things with spanners or a rattle gun. Tight as we can.
I know some washers are not meant to have too much pressure and mostly the manuals for machines give a torque figure which we could apply. Biggest item likely to be 140hp tractor wheel nuts. We want to take away the guesswork, so please can anyone recommend something suitable? The choice is bewildering.
thanks.

Bought one of these to do a head gasket, about 150lb/ft maximum, more than enough for vehicles, don't know about tractor nuts

Thanks for above. What numbers do I need? We have sockets at half and three quarter inch drive. Need enough for the trac wheels and similar bigger items.

you will need 2, if you want to cover all bases. TBH if your doing them tight already then there is something wrong with the seating of the wheel, worn studs, worn holes etc

This one does a good range for ag stuff. The manufacturers specify 750nm for our combine which is the highest number we use. TBH once the bolts have been over tightened they stretch slightly so the quoted figures may not be appropriate anymore.

I switched to using a torque wrench on an older land rover for a while and had issues with nuts coming loose. I switched back to doing them up by feel and didn't have a wheel trying to fall off again.

Ideally a machine should get new studs and nuts if they have gotten worn or stretched.

My brother changed a wheel on dad's car once and did the nuts by feel and did them too tight. Three snapped while driving it next day

Every stud stretches as you tension it by tightening nut, whether it deforms permanently is another issue. Torque applied and stud tension will depend on lubricant used and whether its on the threads or on the nut face.

Back to original question, one of these might be an option

Some people's "feeling" can be a little numb compared to others. For landrover wheel nuts I used a short 1/2" T bar to do them up. Some friends used a much longer wrench and would heave on it as hard as they could, then wonder why the nuts would be so hard to undo and the chromed caps distorted.

Torque wrenches are very useful tools, but aren't fool or inexperienced proof.

Our steel defender wheels get done until the nuts squeak!
